-- Championed and signed the anti-LGBTQ HB 2, a North Carolina law that both required individuals to use bathrooms according to biological sex as well as nullified all local expansion of LGBTQ protections. This move sparked national outcry and lost opportunity for the Tar Heel State.

-- In meeting with anti-LGBTQ leader Tony Perkins and pastors, said of transgender people, "I'm going to treat people who are transgender. I'm going to hug them and say I love them. But I don't [agree], I don't agree with the concept of redefining gender. That is a major societal change."

-- Supported North Carolina's discriminatory constitutional amendment banning marriage equality: "I will vote yes on the amendment because I believe that marriage is defined as between one man and one woman."

-- Fought the Obama administration on restroom access for transgender students, saying he'd "protect North Carolina values from the imposition of extreme views from Washington."

-- Voted down and/or opposed pro-LGBT ordinances in three different decades, in three different elected offices.

-- Once criticized protections on the basis of sexual orientation by saying, "this community is often wanting special status."

-- Opposed holding a pride parade in a public park, saying "I do not want that festival in a park setting...If they need to do it, I think it belongs in a hotel or other private setting."

-- Refused to issue a mayoral welcome statement to the Human Rights Campaign's Carolinas Dinner, citing political disagreement.
