Exclusive Clip: The Wanda Sykes Show
November 13, 2009
Out Comedian Wanda Sykes braves the late-night talk show boys club for the 2nd week with The Wanda Sykes Show this Saturday on Fox. We congratulate Sykes for being the first openly gay woman and only the third woman overall to headline a late-night show on a major network.
As she did in her recent HBO hit comedy special I’ma Be Me, Sykes will lend her biting commentary to a range of topics: news, politics, sports, pop culture and her new role as wife and mother. Sykes will put her personal touch on the week’s hot topics, with a mix of stand-up, field pieces and panel discussions with famous friends and guests. Her guests this week are Actor Ian Gomez of ABC’s Cougar Town (also known to his LGBT fans from his role as Javier on Felicity), NFL Cincinatti Superstar Chad Ochocinco, Radio Host/Author Tom Joyner and Former NBA Star John Salley.
See the exclusive GLAAD clip from the premiere here: https://www.glaad.org/wandasykesvideo
Sykes can also be seen as the brutally honest Barb on the CBS show The New Adventures in Old Christine, which received a GLAAD Media Award in 2009 for Outstanding Individual Episode-Television for shedding a light on job discrimination faced by same-sex couples. An outspoken advocate for equality, Sykes brought attention to the No on Prop. 8 campaign last year when she appeared at a pre-election Las Vegas rally and proclaimed, “I’m proud to be a woman, I’m proud to be a black woman and I’m proud to be gay.”
It’s so important that Americans get to know the diversity of our community and hear stories about loving and committed couples, like Wanda and her partner.
When people hear stories like Wanda’s in their living rooms, it sparks the conversations that are changing people’s hearts and minds. We hope that her presence will continue to shine a light on the diverse experiences of women, Black women and gay and lesbian people in this country.
Right now GLAAD is working with individuals and families across the country to spotlight their own stories in local communities – places like Maine where marriage rights were eliminated for gay and lesbian couples in the November 3rd and in Maryland where we are working with the Maryland Black Family Alliance to amplify the voices of African Americans and their support for equality. As more and more people get to know our community and our stories, the public support for our equality is growing.
The Wanda Sykes Show airs this Saturday, 11pm on FOX.

Journalist Christopher Hitchens Defames Comedian Wanda Sykes
May 13, 2009
Reports have surfaced that author and journalist Christopher Hitchens used a defamatory slur about openly lesbian comedian Wanda Sykes after her performance at the White House Correspondent’s Dinner in Washington, DC this past weekend.
New York Magazine’s Daily Intel blog broke the story in a post titled “The Unseen Moments of the WHCA Dinner.” The report gives a behind the scenes account of how various attendees behaved at the event, and in some cases, what they said. Here’s how Daily Intel described the Hitchens incident:
By the end of the night, Christopher Hitchens was of course the last man (barely) standing, and he had some choice words for the evening’s headlining comedian, Wanda Sykes. “The President should be squirming in his seat. Not smiling,” he said. “The Black D**e got it wrong. No one told her the rules.”
In criticizing Sykes’ performance, Hitchens denigrates her by going after her race and her sexual orientation as a way of putting her in her place. After last year’s performance at the National Press Club, nobody criticized Stephen Colbert by calling him a “straight white male.” But Hitchens felt comfortable referring to Sykes as a “black d**e” as a way of dismissing her based on her identity, and took it even further by implying that is the reason she doesn’t know “the rules.”
In a country where people can be fired from their jobs for being gay, and where black women are paid 69 cents on the dollar compared to white men, it’s all too common that people are judged based on who they are, not for their job performance. It’s despicable that Hitchens seems to engage in a similar approach – denigrating who she is as a way of attacking her performance.
We urge media outlets who are booking Hitchens to take into account the kind of rhetoric that he’s so comfortable using so casually.

Sykes will also hit the field, conducting “man on the street” interviews with unsuspecting subjects.
Wanda Sykes to Make Fun of Obama in May
February 13, 2009
Openly gay comic Wanda Sykes has been selected to host the White House Correspondents’ Association annual dinner in Washington. This black-tie event is known as an uproarious occasion, a night filled with laughter and good-natured ribbing.
Sykes told the Associated Press, “The first thing I did when they asked me to do this gig — I made sure my taxes were paid,” taking a dig at the withdrawal of former U.S. Sen. Tom Daschle from Obama’s cabinet due to unpaid taxes.
She also admitted that performing for such a high-profile crowd is “scary but very exciting.”
The dinner is slated to take place May 9. The guest list of some 2,000 people will likely include the usual mix of Washington elite, White House press corps and Hollywood celebrities.
NAACP Image Awards Winners
February 13, 2009
Though we reported last month that the NAACP Image Awards held an unprecedented number of LGBT-inclusive nominations in its 40th year, sadly, these noms didn’t turn to gold last night.
Even though gay talent like Wanda Sykes (The New Adventures of Old Christine) and Patrik-Ian Polk (Noah’s Arc: Jumping the Broom) were recognized through their nominations, both were beat out by their straight colleagues. Straight actors playing gay characters like Paul James (GREEK), Sonja Sohn (The Wire) and Michael K. Williams (The Wire) went home empty-handed as well.
The only LGBT-inclusive nominee to win was ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, which was awarded Outstanding Drama Series.
