Showtime Green Lights Real-Life L Word

September 1, 2009

Recently, in the GLAAD Network Responsibility Index, we noted that Showtime would have a significant void to fill in their programming following the cancellation of The L Word. This morning, Variety reported that Showtime will be filling the L Word gap with…a reality twist on The L Word.

Via Variety:

Showtime is reviving “The L Word” — but this time as a reality series.

Pay cabler has greenlit nine episodes of “The Real L Word: Los Angeles,” from “L Word” creator Ilene Chaiken and reality producers Magical Elves (“Top Chef”).

Show will follow six lesbians in Los Angeles as they go about their lives — a lesbian answer to Bravo’s “Real Housewives” franchise. Project is dependent on casting, the net said; if all goes as planned, “The Real L Word” would debut sometime next year.

“The L Word,” which ran for six seasons on Showtime, wrapped up earlier this year. Series, which starred Jennifer Beals, Mia Kirshner and Laurel Holloman, among others, centered on a fictional group of women, both gay and straight, in Los Angeles.

“Even though we concluded our sixth season of ‘The L Word’ on Showtime this past March, I believe we are not nearly finished telling our ‘L Word’ stories,” Chaiken said. “Showtime has yet again come forward to continue with us this mission to entertain and enlighten and bring more ‘L’ to the world.”

Chaiken, who exec produced “L Word,” will also EP “The Real L Word,” along with Magical Elves’ Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz.

“We love to tell authentic stories about complex characters and feel like this is an area that has yet to be explored in reality television,” Lipsitz said.

“Real L Word” is the latest in a string of series orders for Showtime, which last week greenlit the Laura Linney starrer “The C Word.” Cabler also has “Oliver Stone’s Secret History of America” on tap.

“The Real L Word” is the second spinoff for Chaiken. The exec producer was behind the scripted spinoff “The Farm,” which starred “The L Word’s” Leisha Hailey. That project wasn’t picked up to series, however.

Added Cutforth: “We’re ready to take on the challenge of living up to the groundbreaking drama of the original ‘L-Word’.”

Actress Kelly McGillis Comes Out

April 30, 2009

Kelly McGillis, star of Top Gun and The Accused, came out as lesbian in an April 30 interview with SheWired.com. She told vlogger Jennifer Corday that her “life in a whole different phase” and that she is “done with the man thing.”

The actress said that realizing her sexuality has been an ongoing process for her since she was 12 years old, but through her life faced getting over being convinced that God was punishing her for being gay.

Corday told McGillis that it’s much easier to become spiritual now and people realize that “God is okay with you being gay.”

McGillis added that “life is a freaking journey, and it’s about growing and changing, and coming to terms with who and what you are, and loving who and what you are.”

Remember when McGillis guest starred on The L Word as a closeted Army Colonel trying a Don’t Ask Don’t Tell case? Brilliant!

VIDEO: Black LGBT Media Images Explored

March 26, 2009

Members of the entertainment community came together recently to discuss the state of African American LGBT images in the media. And with The Wire, Noah’s Arc and The L Word all part of television history, these images are slimmer than ever. Thanks to our friends at Screen Actors Guild, the 90-minute panel is now available for viewing — and in HD — right here at glaadBLOG.

“Knocking Down the Door: Black LGBT Images in Media” was a standing-room only event that took place at Screen Actors Guild, sponsored by GLAAD and the National Black Justice Coalition. The panel was co-sponsored by SAG’s LGBT Actors Committee and the Beverly Hills/Hollywood Branch of the NAACP.

The panel began with opening remarks from SAG Interim Executive Director David White, and featured Deondray Gossett and Quincy LeNear, the creative duo behind The DL Chronicles; actor/director/writer Maurice Jamal (Dirty Laundry, The Ski Trip); performer J. Karen Thomas, founding member of the SAG LGBT Actors Committee; TV personality Marcellas Reynolds; performer and trans activist Ashley Love, host of the online series LGB to the T; actor and NAACP Image Award nominee Sonja Sohn (The Wire); and Willis Edwards, member of the NAACP National Board of Directors. The event was moderated by Rashad Robinson, GLAAD Senior Director of Media Programs and featured a special appearance by Alice Huffman, President of the California State NAACP.

To read more about the panel, check out this post, or just sit back and watch it for yourself here:

Special thanks to Kevin Curran, Screen Actors Guild

One L of a Ride

March 6, 2009

It’s hard to believe that The L Word will air its last episode on Sunday. For six seasons, showrunner Ilene Chaiken has delivered titillating storylines, drama-filled relationships, real-world twists and turns, and, oh yeah, a lot of hot sex.

But what will our televisions look like without the weekly dose of lesbian and bi women teetering our way in their fabulous shoes?

  • With The L Word off the air, that leaves us clinging to Callie and Arizona on Grey’s Anatomy for views of any significant lesbian relationships — and right now it seems the show’s sights are squarely set on Meredith and Derek’s romance.
  • Angela (Bones) and Thirteen (House) are both (apparently) bisexual women, but are rarely seen dating any real, live ladies; they’re usually just making out with them in “very special episodes.”
  • Nip/Tuck ended this week with lesbian anaethesiologist Liz Cruz marrying Dr. Christian Troy because she’s lonely and he thought he was dying.
  • Heather on Big Love may be gay, but she’s a devout Mormon and very comfortable in that closet of hers in Utah.
  • The teen soapy drama South of Nowhere regularly featured two queer gals, but sadly, it signed off permanently last fall.
  • All I can say is, Weeds better hurry up and return because pre-teen Isabelle may be the only openly gay woman on cable left!

We’ll miss the ladies of The L Word. Bette, Tina, Jenny, Shane, Alice, Tasha and Helena are fabulous women who, for the most part, dress impeccably and seem to have a pretty darn good time dating, working, partying and, most of all, living openly and honestly.

The series finale of The L Word airs Sunday, March 8 at 9 PM on Showtime, with a retrospective of all six seasons airing at 8 PM.
