New PSA with Sofia Vergara of Modern Family on Top Spanish-Language Network
November 12, 2009
A new Spanish-language public service announcement (PSA) recently premiered on Telemundo, one of the nation’s most important and influential Spanish-language networks.
It is one of two spots that will run on Telemundo. The first features Sofia Vergara (Modern Family) and the second PSA features Vergara along with Zoe Saldana (Star Trek) and Eduardo Xol (Extreme Makeover: Home Edition).
In Spanish, the celebrities remind viewers that their LGBT Latino friends or family members may not always feel included by society and urges viewers to reach out to them. The ads also ask viewers to visit www.glaad.org where the “Hazte Amigo y Aliado” section in Spanish offers a whole host of resources.
“Our straight allies play a crucial role in opening hearts and minds about the lives of LGBT people,” said GLAAD president Jarrett Barrios. “We are so pleased to have Sofia, Zoe and Eduardo lending their voices to this important campaign targeted to Latino audiences- where visibility of LGBT people is often low. By airing these important messages, Telemundo is providing an important platform and resources for LGBT allies.”
GLAAD’s “Be an Ally & a Friend” PSA campaign features 22 public figures from television, film and sports. GLAAD has released a 20- or 30-second version of the PSA through broadcast collaborations with Access Hollywood, national cable networks such as Fox Reality, GSN, IFC, Lifetime, The N, Sci Fi Channel and Sundance Channel; local cable systems and network affiliates; online at LiveVideo, YouTube, LOGO, AOL Video and MySpace.

Today, GLAAD unveiled our all-new “Be an Ally & a Friend” public education campaign. This year’s campaign has 22 public service announcements (PSAs) featuring 32 top entertainers from the world of television, film and music.
“Now, more than ever, we need the support of straight allies in our work towards full equality for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community,” says GLAAD President Neil G. Giuliano. “Straight allies play a vital role in fostering a climate of understanding and respect for LGBT people in their communities, helping all of us to recognize the common ground that we share.”
The campaign, now in its third year, features two distinct spots: one about the importance of accepting a gay friend or family member, the other about standing up for gay and transgender equality. These PSAs encourage the audience to “be an ally and a friend,” sending viewers to online resources to give them the tools to support LGBT family, friends, colleagues and fellow students, and find ways to get involved in gay and transgender advocacy in their own communities. There are multiple 20- and 30-second versions of the spots, as well as versions of the PSA in Spanish.
“The diverse group of 32 talented entertainers – gay, straight and transgender – who gave their time and energy to this campaign deserves our deepest thanks for participating in this effort to reach a critical audience,” Giuliano continues. “We are so thankful to the networks across the country who have proudly broadcast the ‘Be an Ally & a Friend’ campaign in both English and Spanish, sending a clear message of acceptance and support to their viewers.”
The PSAs feature (alphabetically) actor Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin (Dirty Sexy Money), Candis Cayne (Dirty Sexy Money), Gabrielle Christian (South of Nowhere), comic Kate Clinton, Lauren Collins (Degrassi: The Next Generation), actor Alan Cumming, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, Loretta Devine (Grey’s Anatomy), Sally Field (Brothers & Sisters), Van Hansis (As the World Turns), Cheyenne Jackson (Glee), Paul James (GREEK), T.R. Milk Screenwriter Directs New “Republicans Against 8″ PSAs
October 28, 2008
It’s only Tuesday, but already, it’s been a busy week for Dustin Lance Black. Last night, he was honored at the Hollywood Awards gala with the Breakthrough Award for his screenplay of Milk. Tonight, the Harvey Milk biopic has its world premiere in San Francisco’s Castro District, which Black will attend. But wait! There’s more!
Black has just released two new “No on 8″ PSAs that he directed and shot himself. According to The Advocate, Black teamed with Republicans Against 8 campaign director Scott Schmidt because he wanted to know if there was anything more than fund-raising he could do to fight Proposition 8, California’s proposed ban on same-sex marriage. According to The Advocate:
The two ads feature an impressive roster of everyday gay citizens, including a Vietnam veteran and a Boeing rocket scientist, two people who say they have devoted their careers to protecting the rights and lives of Americans. The ads urge Californians to now step up and return the favor on November 4.
Schmidt said having Black on board gave the effort an added bit of authenticity. The No on 8 logo that appears throughout the ads is a re-creation of a logo from San Francisco’s 1978 No on 6 effort. Proposition 6, also known as the Briggs Initiative, would have prohibited gay people from teaching in California.
Milk premieres tonight in San Francisco, where buttons featuring the No on 8 logo would be handed out to all who attend.
The Suarez Family Says “No on 8!”
October 28, 2008
Beloved Ugly Betty cast members America Ferrera (Betty), Tony Plana (Ignacio) and Ana Ortiz (Hilda) have teamed to film the latest “No on 8″ PSA, urging Californians to vote against Proposition 8, which would deny gay couples the right to marry.
The spot, which was recorded in both English and Spanish, began airing on television stations yesterday.
“We are thrilled that these prominent actors are speaking directly to the Latino community,” Yvette Martinez, the political director of No on 8, said in a statement. “Proponents have targeted the Latino community with advertisements that continue to lie about Prop 8. We’re so proud and so grateful to have America, Tony and Ana stand against discrimination and for fairness and equality.”
We couldn’t agree more! Check out the spot below and be sure to share it with your friends.

Hilary Duff and Wanda Sykes School Haters in New GLSEN PSAs
October 8, 2008
The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) is launching the first national PSA campaign designed to address the use of anti-gay language among teens, in an effort to specifically eradicate the phrase “that’s so gay.” The spots star actress Hilary Duff and comedian Wanda Sykes.
The campaign includes television, radio, print, outdoor and Web advertising. According to GLSEN, the PSAs are designed to “motivate teens to become allies in the efforts to raise awareness, stop using anti-LGBT language, and safely intervene when they are present and anti-LGBT harassment and behavior occurs.” The PSAs direct audiences to visit a new comprehensive website, www.ThinkB4YouSpeak.com.
The campaign launch coincides with the release of GLSEN’s 2007 National School Climate Survey, which found that nearly nine in 10 lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) teens report having been verbally harassed in the past school year, and almost half have been physically harassed because of their sexual orientation.
“We are proud to partner with the Ad Council on this groundbreaking campaign to address anti-LGBT language,” said GLSEN Founder and Executive Director Kevin Jennings in a statement. “Every student has a right to feel safe in school free from bullying and harassment. When students do not feel safe, they struggle to learn. This campaign will help educate young people about the harmful language many of them commonly use.”
