GLAAD Discusses LGBT Media Images at USC Panel

GLAAD’s Director of Spanish Language Media, Monica Trasandes, and Entertainment Media Manager Jonathan Rosales were both recently asked to be part of, “Out and About,” a panel by the Annenberg Latino Student Association at the University of Southern California.
The panel offered a discussion on the portrayal of gays and lesbians in the media and entertainment industry. The organizers said GLAAD’s presence helped educate and excite students and faculty about these issues.
“It was a great to have GLAAD there to discuss images and portrayals in both English and Spanish language media that these students may not be aware of. It was also a unique opportunity to show them how they, as future content producers, media professionals and community leaders, can help shape representations of gay and transgender people,” said Manuel Miranda, director of the Annenberg Latino Student Association at USC.

Fabiola en Las Comadres con Gloria B
Fabiola Golden es La Mucama de Las Comadres con Gloria B, el único programa matutino local de la televisión en español en Nueva York. Su formato dinámico, entretenido y versátil esta especialmente diseñado para el mercado del área tri-estatal.
En el segmento de Fabiola ella habla sobre sus vivencias, sus relaciones amorosas, la comunidad LGBT y más. GLAAD lleva casi un año colaborando con el programa proveyendo ideas, voceros y preparación para Fabiola con los temas de la comunidad LGBT.
“Trate de transformarme en una persona real con sentimientos y con inseguridades y todo eso. Me dan la libertad de hablar de lo que quiera. Ahora las señoras me paran en la calle y me invitan a sacar fotos con sus hijos”, dijo Fabiola. Ella es la primera personalidad de televisión transgénero que sale todos los días en un programa matutino para el público masivo latino en los Estados Unidos.

Las Comadres con Gloria B es el único programa matutino que tiene un espacio consistente para la comunidad gay y transgénero en el mercado latino. Fabiola se dio a conocer en este espacio titulado “La Comunidad”.
Fue invitada varias veces para hablar sobre su vida como mujer transgénero y “go go dancer”. Con cada entrevista cautivó a la producción, al igual que al público televisivo, hasta que fue invitada por la productora, Mapi Montero, a formar parte del elenco permanentemente.
“Siento la responsabilidad de ser una mujer normal. Sobre todo soy artista y de casualidad soy trans. Mi naturaleza es ser buena. Me divierto. Siempre estoy dando charlas con la comunidad LGBT”, dijo Fabiola. No podemos dejar de mencionar que Cachita fue la primera persona transgénero que apareció consistentemente como personalidad en la televisión latina en los Estados Unidos. Fabiola tiene mucho respeto por Cachita pero no se siente identificada con ella.
“Lo único que a mi me interesa es que quieran a Fabiola. Ayer me paró una señora y me dijo que le causo alegría. Fue muy linda. Es increíble la energía cuando me abrazan o me dan un beso en la calle”, finalizó Fabiola.

Fabiola is “The Maid” of Las Comadres con Gloria B, the only local Spanish morning talk show in New York. In her segment, Fabiola, speaks about her every day life, loves, the LGBT community and more. She is the first transgender TV personality that appears daily on a morning talk show in the Latino market. GLAAD has been collaborating with the program for about a year pitching ideas, spokespeople and preparing Fabiola with all topics dealing with the LGBT community.
Las Comadres con Gloria B is the only morning talk show in the Latino market that has a segment specifically about the gay community consistently. Through this segment titled “La Comunidad” Fabiola went on the show as a guest several times. She went on to speak about her experience as a transgender woman and as a go go dancer. With each interview she captivated the production team and the viewers until the Executive Producer, Mapi Montero, asked her to become one of the regular personalities on the show.
“The only thing I’m interested in is that the world love Fabiola. Overall, I’m an artist that happens to be trans. My nature is to be good. I have fun. I’m always doing talkbacks with the LGBT community,” said Fabiola.

Su misión es investigar, colectar, preservar y educar acerca de la historia, cultura, herencia arte, eventos sociales y las ricas contribuciones de la comunidad latina en Washington DC.
Did you know there is an organization that is archiving our history? The Latino GLBT History Project was founded in April, 2000 to respond to the critical need to preserve and educate about history of the Latino LGBT community.
Its mission is to investigate, collect, preserve and educate about history, culture, heritage, arts, social and the rich contributions of the Latino LGBT community in metropolitan Washington, DC.

“Una de mis metas es preservar la historia de la comunidad por que a veces la comunidad GLBT latina es representada de manera falsa en la historia. A veces la historia trata de no reconocer o borrar los nombres de nuestros líderes”, dijo el presidente de LHP, José Gutierrez.
“One of my goals is to preserve the history of the community because sometimes the Latino GLBT community is misrepresented in history. Sometimes history tries to not count or erase the names of our leaders,” said José Gutierrez, President of LHP.

Objetos como la primera propuesta de LLEGO, la tiara de la primera mujer transgénero latina (Linda Carrero) nombrada Miss Gay América 1999, y como 10,000 fotografías, 10 pancartas y muchos folletos estan en baúles por toda el apartamento de José Gutierrez.
LHP espera poder tener su propio espacio en un futuro pero por el momento estan trabajando en lanzar su página web. “Esta es una manera de reconocer los logros de mucha gente que ha luchado por años”, dijo Gutierrez.

LHP hopes to have its own space where all the historical objects can be preserved and exhibited properly, but for the moment they are working on getting a web page. “This is a way to recognize the achievements of many people who have struggled for years,” said Gutierrez.

Chicago’s Queer Prom 2009: Amor sin fronteras/Love Without Borders

“Amor sin fronteras” or “Love Without Borders” is this year’s theme for the only prom for and by LGBT youth in the Chicago area. Queer Prom 2009 will take place on May 29th at the National Museum of Mexican Art.
“We want to provide a feeling of community, an event that identifies the Latin@ community, the gay community and Pilsen as a neighborhood…I think a lot times a young gay person, especially in schools in La Villita [a predominantly Mexican neighborhood] feel isolated from the gay community. The only thing they know is Boystown [a predominantly gay white male neighborhood in Chicago], clubs and the commercial aspects of being gay. We mean to connect them to another aspect of the community, ” said Tania Unzueta, Coordinator of Queer Prom 2009.
“Amor sin fronteras” es el título del Queer Prom 2009 que es el único evento de este tipo para la juventud en el area de Chicago. El evento se llevará acabo el 29 de mayo en el Museo Nacional de Arte Mexicano.
“Queremos proveer un sentido de comunidad, un evento que identifica a la comunidad latina, la comunidad gay y Pilsen como barrio…Creo que muchas veces los jóvenes gays, especialmente en La Villita [barrio predominantemente mexicano] se sienten aislados de la comunidad gay. Lo único que conocen es Boystown [barrio predominantemente de hombres gays anglosajones], centros nocturnos y el aspecto comercial de ser gay. Nosotros buscamos conectarlos a otras partes de la comunidad”, comentó la coordinadora del evento Tania Unzueta.
The first Queer Prom
The first Queer Prom took place in 2004 with the theme, “Noche de arcoiris” or “Rainbow Night” as an event sponsored by Homofrecuencia, the only Spanish language radio show by and for LGBT youth in the United States and recipient of a Special Recognition at the 19th Annual GLAAD Media Awards. The coordinators were not sure what was going to happen.
El primer Queer Prom se llevó acabo en el 2004 con el título de “Noche de Arcoiris”. El evento fue patrocinado por Homofrecuencia, el único programa radial en español ejecutado por y para los jóvenes LGBT en EU y recipiente de un reconocimiento especial en la 19ª entrega de los Premios GLAAD. Los coordinadores en ese entonces no sabían que iba pasar.

“The community in general has asked us, ‘Why have an event that segregates gay youth?’ Our response to that is that when all youth are able to go to school feeling safe then there won’t be a need for such events,” said Unzueta. T
he coordinator of Queer Prom 2009 states that some of the challenges they’ve received to the event parallel those that have also challenged the proposed Social Justice High School – Pride Campus.
The high school aims to have a curriculum and environment that is inclusive of LGBT students. Currently, Chicago Public Schools has delayed a Board of Education vote on the campus that would be a first in the area and only second in the country to the Harvey Milk High School in New York City.
“La comunidad en general nos ha preguntado, ‘Por qué tener un evento donde se estan aislando?’. Nuestro argumento es que cuando todos los jóevens tengan el derecho de ir a la escuela y sentirse seguros no habrá necesidad de estos eventos”, comentó Unzueta.
La coordinadora del Queer Prom 2009 comenta que algunos de los comentarios en contra de el evento son parecidos a aquellos comentarios que retan al Social Justice High School – Pride Campus. Esta escuela aspira tener un plan de estudio que incluye la historia de la comunidad gay y también de crear un espacio donde los jóvenes LGBT se sientan seguros.
El departamento de educación de Chicago ha demorado el voto para implementar esta escuela que sería la primera de su tipo en esta area y la segunda en el país. La primera fue la Harvey Milk High School en Nueva York.
