New PSA with Sofia Vergara of Modern Family on Top Spanish-Language Network

November 12, 2009

A new Spanish-language public service announcement (PSA) recently premiered on Telemundo, one of the nation’s most important and influential Spanish-language networks.

It is one of two spots that will run on Telemundo. The first features Sofia Vergara (Modern Family) and the second PSA features Vergara along with Zoe Saldana (Star Trek) and Eduardo Xol (Extreme Makeover: Home Edition).

In Spanish, the celebrities remind viewers that their LGBT Latino friends or family members may not always feel included by society and urges viewers to reach out to them. The ads also ask viewers to visit www.glaad.org where the “Hazte Amigo y Aliado” section in Spanish offers a whole host of resources.

“Our straight allies play a crucial role in opening hearts and minds about the lives of LGBT people,” said GLAAD president Jarrett Barrios. “We are so pleased to have Sofia, Zoe and Eduardo lending their voices to this important campaign targeted to Latino audiences- where visibility of LGBT people is often low. By airing these important messages, Telemundo is providing an important platform and resources for LGBT allies.”

GLAAD’s “Be an Ally & a Friend” PSA campaign features 22 public figures from television, film and sports. GLAAD has released a 20- or 30-second version of the PSA through broadcast collaborations with Access Hollywood, national cable networks such as Fox Reality, GSN, IFC, Lifetime, The N, Sci Fi Channel and Sundance Channel; local cable systems and network affiliates; online at LiveVideo, YouTube, LOGO, AOL Video and MySpace.

Be an Ally & a Friend Today!

April 14, 2009

Today, GLAAD unveiled our all-new “Be an Ally & a Friend” public education campaign. This year’s campaign has 22 public service announcements (PSAs) featuring 32 top entertainers from the world of television, film and music.

Sally Field and Ron Rifkin

“Now, more than ever, we need the support of straight allies in our work towards full equality for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community,” says GLAAD President Neil G. Giuliano. “Straight allies play a vital role in fostering a climate of understanding and respect for LGBT people in their communities, helping all of us to recognize the common ground that we share.”

The campaign, now in its third year, features two distinct spots: one about the importance of accepting a gay friend or family member, the other about standing up for gay and transgender equality. These PSAs encourage the audience to “be an ally and a friend,” sending viewers to online resources to give them the tools to support LGBT family, friends, colleagues and fellow students, and find ways to get involved in gay and transgender advocacy in their own communities. There are multiple 20- and 30-second versions of the spots, as well as versions of the PSA in Spanish.

Ellen DeGeneres

“The diverse group of 32 talented entertainers – gay, straight and transgender – who gave their time and energy to this campaign deserves our deepest thanks for participating in this effort to reach a critical audience,” Giuliano continues. “We are so thankful to the networks across the country who have proudly broadcast the ‘Be an Ally & a Friend’ campaign in both English and Spanish, sending a clear message of acceptance and support to their viewers.”

The PSAs feature (alphabetically) actor Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin (Dirty Sexy Money), Candis Cayne (Dirty Sexy Money), Gabrielle Christian (South of Nowhere), comic Kate Clinton, Lauren Collins (Degrassi: The Next Generation), actor Alan Cumming, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, Loretta Devine (Grey’s Anatomy), Sally Field (Brothers & Sisters), Van Hansis (As the World Turns), Cheyenne Jackson (Glee), Paul James (GREEK), T.R. Knight (Grey’s Anatomy), Alec Mapa (Ugly Betty), Becki Newton (Ugly Betty), comic Graham Norton, Tony Potts (Access Hollywood), Maeve Quinlan (South of Nowhere), Anthony Rapp (Rent), comic Caroline Rhea, Ron Rifkin (Brothers & Sisters), Anika Noni Rose (The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency), Adamo Ruggiero (Degrassi: The Next Generation), Zoe Saldana (Star Trek), Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer), Jake Silbermann (As the World Turns), singer Joss Stone, Michael Urie (Ugly Betty), Sofia Vergara (Madea Goes to Jail), musician Rufus Wainwright and Eduardo Xol (Extreme Makeover: Home Edition).

The first PSA stars Kyra Sedgwick, Kevin Bacon, Ellen DeGeneres, Anika Noni Rose, Alan Cumming, William Baldwin, Rufus Wainwright, Sally Field and Ron Rifkin. It can be viewed at www.glaad.org, or here:

Cable Nets Line Up to Come Out

October 9, 2008

Something historic will happen this Saturday, Oct. 11, in honor of National Coming Out Day: At least seven cable networks will air supportive coming out public service announcements, making this the largest national one-day television promotion ever for LGBT equality.

Fox Reality Channel, IFC, Lifetime, The N, SCI FI Channel, Sundance Channel, USA Network and various ABC affiliates will air GLAAD’s “Be an Ally & a Friend” PSAs on Saturday. Several of the networks also aired the celebrity spots throughout the week. The spots feature 22 personalities, such as T.R. Knight, Marlee Matlin and Martina Navratilova, sharing with viewers the importance of accepting gay friends and family members.

This is the 20th Annual National Coming Out Day, observed every October 11. The day was established in 1988 to commemorate the first anniversary of the second national march on Washington for LGBT rights.

“National Coming Out Day gives us a vital opportunity to talk about ensuring that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people feel comfortable being open about who they are with their friends and families and in their communities,” says GLAAD President Neil G. Giuliano. “Thanks to the generosity of our broadcast partners, we have a tremendous opportunity to reach Americans across the country with a message of inclusion and acceptance.”

Entourage is Picked Up For a Sixth Season

October 7, 2008

The HBO Emmy-winning comedy Entourage has officially been picked up for a sixth season. In our book, this means one thing to cheer about: more Rex Lee!

Lloyd with his boss Ari

Lloyd with his boss Ari

Though the series has always been gay-inclusive, Rex’s character, Lloyd, was initially in the background, shadowed by his overbearing boss, Ari (played by three-time Emmy winner Jeremy Piven). However, with each passing season, Lloyd has been given a little more screen time. He went from just answering phones to participating in plot lines that wholly revolved around his personal life. Suddenly, I was watching episodes that had Lloyd in nearly every scene with Ari. And when he got a boyfriend — who we actually got to meet — I knew Entourage had officially crossed over: Lloyd was a three-dimensional gay character on an incredibly successful and popular show.

But the ultimate achievement transpired within this current season: For the first time, Rex Lee’s name is in the opening credits. This is a huge step forward for the actor — and for gay visibility.

Rex plays one of the few gay Asian Pacific-Islander characters on television today. In GLAAD’s recent Where We Are on TV diversity study, we found there are only six Asian LGBT characters on cable, a mere 7%. (In contrast, there are 74 white characters, 82%.)

Don’t get HBO? You can still enjoy Lloyd’s zingers by reading his blog. Check out “Letters from Lloyd” here.

And don’t say that Rex never gives back to his community. He participated in GLAAD’s “Be an Ally & a Friend” PSA campaign last year. Feast your eyes.
