LA Doc Fans: Free Screening Tonight!

May 19, 2009 by Sarah

Attention, Anglenos! Make plans to head over to Westwood tonight to check out a FREE work-in-progress screening of Out in the Silence, a documentary about the lives of gay and lesbian people in rural America.

When filmmaker Joe Wilson announced his wedding to his partner, Dean Hamer, in his hometown’s paper in 2004 (pictured), he created controversy among his small town’s residents. As a result, Wilson began capturing stories of LGBT people in rural America, showing the homophobia many LGBT people in rural areas face every day, in the hopes that these stories would spark much-needed discussion around gay and lesbian issues.

Out in the Silence screens tonight, May 19, at 7:30 pm at the Hammer Museum, located at 10899 Wilshire Blvd. in Westwood.

Though this screening is free, tickets are required, and are available at the Billy Wilder Theater Box Office one hour prior to start time. Limit one ticket per person on a first come, first served basis. Hammer members receive priority seating, subject to availability. Reservations not accepted, RSVPs not required.

Parking is available under the museum for $3 after 6:00pm.

See you tonight!

Attention Angelenos: FREE Documentary Screening!

May 6, 2009 by Sarah

They say the best things in life are free, and that’s especially true in these hard economic times. For all you documentary fans out there, the Hammer Museum at UCLA is offering a unique opportunity to see a new documentary about LGBT issues in rural America for absolutely FREE.

Out in the Silence, a work-in-progress film sponsored by the Sundance Institute, follows a group of gay and lesbian residents in a conservative small town in western Pennsylvania as they try to spark dialogue around LGBT issues and create awareness of the struggle that many of them face on a daily basis.

The filmmaker, Joe Wilson, has made a clip of the film available on YouTube. We highly recommend watching it, to get a feel for the powerful stories that will be told:

Actress Kelly McGillis Comes Out

April 30, 2009 by Sarah

Kelly McGillis, star of Top Gun and The Accused, came out as lesbian in an April 30 interview with SheWired.com. She told vlogger Jennifer Corday that her “life in a whole different phase” and that she is “done with the man thing.”

The actress said that realizing her sexuality has been an ongoing process for her since she was 12 years old, but through her life faced getting over being convinced that God was punishing her for being gay.

Corday told McGillis that it’s much easier to become spiritual now and people realize that “God is okay with you being gay.”

McGillis added that “life is a freaking journey, and it’s about growing and changing, and coming to terms with who and what you are, and loving who and what you are.”

Remember when McGillis guest starred on The L Word as a closeted Army Colonel trying a Don’t Ask Don’t Tell case? Brilliant!

Russell Simmons Shows Support for Marriage Equality

April 23, 2009 by Sarah

Hip-hop and fashion mogul Russell Simmons recently sent an open letter to New York Gov. David Paterson in support of marriage equality. Thanks to Diversity, Inc., we have the unedited text of the letter in its entirety.

Dear Governor Paterson,

I write this letter to you, my friend, to publicly announce my gratitude for your courage and leadership on issues that will ultimately make this state, nation and the world a better place. I have known you for a very long time and have always admired your passion for doing what is right, which is often times not the most popular. This is what makes you a great leader, especially for our underserved communities that you have advocated on behalf of for decades. We were all inspired by your dedication to reforming the drug laws of our state and recognize the accomplishment your administration achieved by ending the Rockefeller Drug Laws after 36 years. So, we know when you believe in something, what you can do.

However, as your friend and supporter, we know you can do much more, if you forget about what the poll numbers say and let your heart lead. You have recently done this in showing support for the legalization of gay marriage. History will show you are right and will we support you on this issue. Mr. Governor, we want to go to work for you and we will, but we will not be easy on you, because we know your potential. When you were unexpectedly put into the role of Chief Executive of New York State, you were handed a plate full of problems. Although your first year was a bumpy ride, we are beginning to see your great leadership and vision shine through and take over. I encourage you to keep leading with your heart, and address issues like the promotion of good diet, well-being and education for youth, as well creating new jobs (hopefully green jobs) for our workers and making sure that every person in our state can afford healthcare. As the first African-American Governor of New York, you have already made history. We now want to help you create a legacy.

Respectfully,
Russell Simmons

This is not the first time that Simmons has shown support of the LGBT community. In a 2006 interview for The Advocate Newsmagazine on Logo, he talked about why it’s important to support all people, and addressed the possible discomfort within the hip-hop community to discuss homophobia.

His portion is in Part 2, 25 seconds in, but we’ve included both parts, of this special segment, because, yes, it’s that good (and still relevant three years later).
