Dominican Cartoonist Links Marriage Equality with Fetishes
GLAAD received several reports about a defamatory cartoon published Jan. 19 in the Dominican newspaper El Diario Libre, drawn by Harold Priego, known as “Boquechivo,” which likens marriage equality with supporting bestiality, necrophilia and other fetishes. These vulgar and outrageous comparisons led LGBT activists and allies to create a Facebook page called “Protesta en contra del Boquechivo sobre el matrimonio entre homosexuales.” Among those who’ve written to GLAAD are respected Puerto Rican journalist Joselly Castrodad de Camblor who now lives in the Dominican Republic and feels the cartoon not only defames gay people but embarrasses journalists and the newspaper itself, one of Santo Domingo’s biggest dailies.
The cartoonist has reportedly responded to the criticism saying: “Why don’t I get these long comments after I touch on subjects like corruption or malfeasance or the ridiculous actions of some politicians … No, they don’t even pay attention to those, as if attacking corruption is a joke but denying marriage means being intolerant.” Priego clearly still does not understand how his work helps to foment prejudice and create a hostile climate for gay and transgender people that puts them in harm’s way.

Dibujo Compara Derechos Matrimoniales con Fetiches
GLAAD ha recibido varias quejas sobre un dibujo difamatorio publicado el 19 de enero en el periódico dominicano El Diario Libre, dibujado por Harold Priego, conocido como Boquechivo, el cual compara apoyar a derechos matrimoniales para personas del mismo sexo con apoyar la bestialidad, necrofilia y otros fetiches. Estas comparaciones vulgares y espantosas causaron que activistas LGBT y sus aliados crean una página de Facebook llamada “Protesta en contra del Boquechivo sobre el matrimonio entre homosexuales.” Entre los que le han escrito a GLAAD está la respetada periodista portorriqueña Joselly Castrodad de Camblor, quien ahora vive en la Republica Dominicana y quien piensa que el dibujo no solo difama a las personas gays pero también avergüenza al periódico y los periodistas quienes aí trabajan. Priego, por su parte ha supuestamente dicho sobre el tema: “Por qué razón no me hacen estos largos comentarios cuando trato los temas de corrupción, o de malversaciones de fondos, o de los disparates que hacen algunos políticos… No, de esos ni caso le hacen, como que atacar la corrupción es solo un chiste, y negarme al matrimonio entre gays es ser intolerante.” Queda claro que Priego todavía no entiende cómo es que su trabajo ayuda a fomentar el prejuicio, lo cual crea un clima de hostilidad que pone en riesgo las personas gays y transgéneras.

GLAAD is proud of the work done by Mexican activists in the wake of defamatory remarks by Esteban Arce, host of the daily show Matutina Express, watched by millions of viewers on Televisa station 4TV.
On a Dec. 21 segment Arce asked guest Elsy Reyes, a sex researcher, to explain the difference between sexual orientation and preference. When Reyes tried to explain that preference was incorrect, and that sexual orientation is a characteristic with which one is born, Arce interrupted several times to interject his prejudices about gay people, asking her pointedly if homosexuality was “normal,” and arguing he didn’t think it was. Arce has made defamatory comments in the past.
Countless viewers were offended and many of them, at least 18 emailed their complaints to Conapred (Consejo Nacional para Prevenir la Discriminación) which then filed a formal complaint against Arce.
Even Televisa owner Emilio Azcárraga Jean weighed in on the issue. He tweeted that the attention garnered by this was being taken into account. Azcárraga then gave out Arce’s twitter address @estarc62, which resulted in his getting some 3000 tweets. Arce claims 60% of the public backs him.
Mexican activists have started a Facebook page called Esteban Arce Fuera del Aire (Esteban Arce Off the Air).
In the U.S., individuals who saw the show on You Tube complained to GLAAD. We then shared those complaints with activists in Mexico City. GLAAD was interviewed on the subject on TV Notas, the popular weekly television magazine and on Chicago radio show Homofrequencia (90.5FM), where we discussed the connection between defamation, prejudice and violence.
Thank you to those of you who wrote to alert GLAAD about Arce’s comments and congratulations to Mexican activists and allies for raising their voices against defamation.
Diciendole No a la Difamación en Mexico
En GLAAD estamos muy orgullosos del trabajo hecho por activistas Mexicanos sobre comentarios difamatorios hechos por Esteban Arce, conductor del programa Matutina Express, mirada por millones en la estación 4TV de Televisa.
En el programa del 21 de diciembre, Arce le pregunto a Elsy Reyes, sexóloga, cual era la diferencia entre orientación sexual y preferencia sexual. Cuando Reyes trato de explicar que preferencia es un término incorrecto porque la sexualidad es una característica con lo cual uno nace, o sea una orientación, Arce la interrumpió varias veces, diciendo que no la creía “normal” la homosexualidad. Arce ha hecho estos tipos de comentarios en el pasado.
Muchos televidentes se sintieron ofendidos, y por lo menos 18 de ellos le enviaron correo electrónico a Conapred (Consejo Nacional para Prevenir la Discriminación), la cual hizo una queja oficial. Hasta el dueño de Televisa, Emilio Azcárraga Jean, ofreció un opinión, diciendo por Twitter que el incidente seria tomado en cuenta. Azcárraga luego ofreció la dirección de Arce: @estarc62 lo cual resulto en que el reciba algunos 3000 tweets. Arce ha dicho que el 60% del pueblo lo apoya.
Activistas mexicanos han creado una página de Facebook llamada Esteban Arce Fuera del Aire.
En los estados unidos, varias personas que vieron el segmento en You Tube contactaron a GLAAD. Nosotros compartimos esas quejas con activistas en la ciudad de Mexico. GLAAD hizo una entrevista en TV Notas, la muy leída revista y en Homofrequencia (90.5FM) un programa de radio de Chicago, donde hablamos sobre la conexión entre difamación, prejuicio y violencia.
Gracias a todos ustedes quienes le escribieron a GLAAD para quejarse sobre los comentarios de Arce y felicidades a los activistas en Mexico y sus aliados, por unir sus voces en contra de la difamación.

On December 21 Mexico City took a step toward becoming the first Latin American city to legalize same-sex marriage. The city has had civil unions for same-sex couples since 2007 but Monday’s decision will give gay couples more rights, including the right to adopt children, which some had tried to strip from the measure.
The bill passed the capital’s local assembly 39-20 to the cheers of supporters who yelled: “Yes, we could! Yes, we could!” Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard is widely expected to sign the measure into law.
Mexico City activist Antonio Medina told GLAAD that LGBT community is very happy with the outcome and that media coverage, thus far, has been respectful.
The bill calls for changing the definition of marriage in the city’s civil code. Marriage is currently defined as the union of a man and a woman. The new definition will be “the free uniting of two people.”
Buenos Aires, Argentina’s capital was the first Latin American city to legalize same-sex civil unions in 2002. Four other Argentine cities later did the same, and as did Mexico City in 2007 and some Mexican and Brazilian states. No Latin American nation allows same-sex marriage although Uruguay passed a national civil unions law and recently passed a law allowing same-sex couples to adopt.
“This is a joyous day for Mexico City as it recognizes that loving and committed gay and lesbian couples should be treated equally under the law,” said Jarrett Barrios, President of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. “GLAAD applauds the steadfast and tireless efforts of Mexican activists to make this historic legislation possible. We strongly encourage journalists to highlight the rich stories of Mexico City’s same-sex couples who will now have the same opportunity to take care of and be responsible for each other. Their lives are at the heart of this decision.”
Viva Mexico!
El 21 de diciembre la ciudad de México tomó un paso para convertirse en la primera ciudad latinoamericana que reconoce el matrimonio entre personas del mismo sexo. La ciudad de México cuenta con Ley de Sociedades de Convivencia desde el 2007 pero esta nueva ley ofrecerá más derechos, incluyendo el de adoptar hijos. Algunos quisieron prohibir este derecho.
La reforma fue aprobada por el pleno de la Asamblea Legislativa del Distrito Federal con 39 votos a favor, 20 en contra y cinco abstenciones. Mientras ocurria el voto, personas celebraron esta iniciativa al grito de “¡Sí se pudo!” Estos cambiosserán ratificadas por el alcalde capitalino Marcelo Ebrard.
El activista Mexicano Antonio Medina le conto a GLAAD que la comunidad se siente muy feliz por el logro y que la cobertura en los medios, hasta ahora, ha sido muy respetuosa.La iniciativa cambia la definición de la palabra matrimonio para que en vez de ser “la unión libre entre un hombre y una mujer,” sea la unión libre de dos personas.”
Buenos Aires, la capital Argentina fue la primer ciudad en América Latina que permitió las uniones civiles. Cuatro más ciudades Argentinas han hecho lo mismo i la ciudad de Mexico en 2007 y también algunos estados mexicanos y brasileños. Ningun país de América Latina ha legalizado el matrimonio entre parejas del mismo sexo. Uruguay tiene una ley de unión civil a nivel nacional y también recientemente legalizó la adopción por parte de parejas del mismo sexo.
“Este es un día feliz para la ciudad de México a lo que se reconoce que parejas del mismo sexo deben de ser tratadas iguales que otras parejas que comparten amor y un compromiso,” dijo Jarrett Barrios, el presidente de GLAAD, la Alianza Gay y Lésbica Contra la Difamación. “GLAAD aplaude esta decisión histórica. Sugerimos a los periodistas que se enfoquen en las historias conmovedoras de las muchas parejas de la ciudad de México quienes ahora tendrán las mismas oportunidades que otras para cuidarse uno al otro y ser responsables uno por el otro. Las vidas de ellos están al centro de esta decisión.”

Romeo Santos de Aventura Pide Disculpa Por Haber Usado Palabra Ofensiva
Algunas palabras son obviamente difamatorias, pero en otros casos es más difícil hacer esa distinción. Por ejemplo, el 7 de diciembre en El Show de Cristina Cristina Saralegui entrevistó al grupo Dominicano Aventura y le preguntó al cantante Anthony “Romeo” Santos, sobre su orientación sexual y se uso la palabra pájaro. Para algunos, la palabra simplemente quiere decir “gay” pero para otros es igual que decir “mar***n.”
“No tengo ni un pelito de pájaro,” dijo Santos y las mujeres en la audiencia lo aplaudieron. Santos también dijo que el grupo tiene fans que son gays y que Aventura trabaja con personas gays pero de nuevo reiteró que él no es “pájaro.”
GLAAD le escribió a los representantes de Aventura para explicarles lo desalentador que fue para los fans gays, bisexuales y transgéneros (y sus familias y amigos) prender la televisión y escuchar esta palabra que para tantos es ofensiva. Le pedimos a Santos que se disculpe, lo cual el hizo. Escribió Santos en un correo electrónico:
“Como dije en el show de Cristina, no soy homofóbico, más tengo amistades gays y personas en mi staff también gays. Si mis palabras fueron ofensivas para usted, y para la Alianza GLAAD, con todo respeto no fue mi intención hacer sentir mal a nadie, y les pido disculpas a todos. La palabra pájaro para muchos significa gay y no es ofensiva, ni vulgar. Pero admito que debi usar una palabra más adecuada. Esto para mí es una lección, y en el futuro no volverá a ocurrir. De nuevo, mil disculpas y no quisiera perder fanáticos gays, por que los amo igual a todos, sin discriminar.”
Que haya ocurrido ésto en El Show de Cristina también fue desalentador, por los millones de personas que miran el programa, y porque Saralegui ha producido muchos segmentos positivos sobre la comunidad LGBT. Saralegui planea discutir el tema de diversidad en su programa del 21 de diciembre.
Aplaudimos a Santos por aclarar de esta manera que nunca fue su intención usar una palabra ofensiva y GLAAD continuará educando a los profesionales de los medios y contando con el apoyo de nuestros miembros para que nos comuniquen lo que están viendo, escuchando o leyendo en los medios.
Romeo Santos of Aventura Apologizes for Using Offensive Word
Some words are clearly defamatory, but with others, that distinction is not always clear. This is often the case when different cultural meanings are attributed to a word. For example, on Dec. 7 segment of El Show de Cristina talk show host Cristina Saralegui interviewed the popular Dominican group Aventura and asked lead singer Anthony “Romeo” Santos about his sexual orientation and the word “pájaro” was used. To some, that word is slang for gay. To others, however, it’s an insult, akin to using “fa***t” in English.
“No tengo ni un pelito de pájaro,” Santos said which translates, approximately to “I don’t have a bit of gay in me,” and the women in the audience cheered. Santos did also acknowledge that there would be nothing wrong with being gay and that the group works with gay musicians and has gay fans. But that was followed by his assurance, again, that no one in Aventura is a “pájaro.”
GLAAD reached out to Aventura’s managers to explain just how disappointing it was for LGBT fans and their families and friends to tune in to El Show de Cristina and hear this hurtful word. We asked Santos to apologize, and he did. He wrote in a personal email:
“As I said on the Cristina show, I am not homophobic. In fact, I have many gay friends and staff members who are gay … If my words were offensive to you and to GLAAD, with all due respect, I never intended to make anyone feel badly and I apologize. To a lot of people the word “pájaro” means gay but is not offensive or vulgar, but I admit that I should have used a more appropriate word. This is a lesson for me and it will not happen again. I would never want to lose my gay fans, because I love them as much as any of my other fans, without discrimination.”
That this occurred on El Show de Cristina was equally disappointing because Saralegui is a ratings champ, watched by millions, and she often does excellent programs about the LGBT community. According to Univision, Saralegui plans to address issues of diversity and inclusion on the Dec. 21 segment of her show.
GLAAD applauds Santos for his response, and we will continue educating media professionals and counting on the support of our members to let us know what they are seeing, hearing or reading on TV, on the radio and in publications.

El periódico El Nuevo Día de Puerto Rico reportó el miércoles que Juan Antonio Martínez Matos, el sospechoso en el horrendo asesinato de Jorge Steven Lopez de 19 años ha usado como defensa la llamada táctica de ‘pánico trans’ cuando en custodia policial.
Esta táctica ‘pánico gay’ o ‘pánico trans’ es común y usada por agresores anti-gay para tratar de justificar acciones al insinuar que las personas gay o transgénero son en parte responsables por la agresión que sufrieron por haber hecho un supuesto gesto romántico que sorprendió al agresor. Este argumento muchas veces influye a los investigadores y a los medios. Trata de legitimar la discriminación, el abuso y la violencia.
El Nuevo Dia escribe que Martínez Matos, 26, dice haber estado buscando mujeres con quien tener sexo cuando López se le arrimo en “un vestido azul y botas.” El sospechoso alega que el dejó que López entre a su vehículo pensando que López era mujer, pero después de descubrir que esto no era cierto, Martínez Matos dijo que tuvo un ‘flashback,’ de repente recordando “cuando lo violaron en la cárcel” y por eso atacó y asesinó al joven. El cuerpo de Lopez fue encontrado decapitado, descuartizado y parcialmente quemado.
Amigos del victima dicen que él se identificaba como gay.
La FBI ha dicho que tomaría control de la investigación si la policía local determina que fue un asesinato motivado por odio.
Es deplorable que Martínez Matos este tratando de justificar sus acciones horrendas con esta ‘defensa’ de pánico. GLAAD le pide a los medios que por favor reporten sobre este crimen de manera justa y veraz para que las autoridades puedan investigar y comunicar claramente los hechos de este horrible crimen.
GLAAD seguirá monitoreando la cobertura en los medios para asegurar que esta sea veraz, objetiva e inclusiva. GLAAD se ha comunicado con la familia de Jorge Steven López y con miembros de la comunidad para ofrecer asistencia.

El cuerpo de un joven de 19 años fue encontrado decapitado desmembrado y parcialmente quemado en la ciudad Puertorriqueña de Cayey el viernes 13 de noviembre en lo que algunos dicen es un crimen de odio. El periódico Puertorriqueño Primera Hora reportó el martes que un sospechoso había sido arrestado y que dos vehículos habían sido detenidos. Sus amigos se habían preocupado cuando el joven, Jorge Steven López, no llegó al club donde habían planeado encontrarse. Un agente investigador fue fuertemente criticado por sus comentarios en los medios sobre el “estilo de vida” del joven. “Este tipo de personas cuando se meten a esto y salen a la calle saben que esto les puede pasar”, le dijo el agente investigador Ángel Rodríguez a Las Noticias Univisión.
Se reportó el lunes que la FBI anuncio que investigaría el asesino si los agentes investigadores locales deciden que si fue un crimen de odio.
El presidente Barack Obama firmo legislación federal tratando con crímenes de odio el mes pasado que incluye la categoría de orientación sexual. GLAAD continuará monitoreando a la cobertura en los medios de este horrible crimen.
Puerto Rican Teen Brutally Slain in Alleged Hate Crime
The body of a nineteen year-old boy was found decapitated, dismembered, and partially burnt in the Puerto Rican city of Cayey on Friday in what some suspect is an anti-gay bias crime.
The Puerto Rico-based newspaper Primera Hora reported on Tuesday that a suspect has been arrested and two vehicles have been seized for investigation in the case.
Friends grew concerned after the teen, Jorge Steven López, failed to meet them at a local club.
A Puerto Rican investigator, Angel Rodriguez, drew stern criticism from LGBT advocates after he implied that López perhaps deserved his brutal fate because of López’s so-called “lifestyle.”
“When these type of people get into this and go out into the streets like this, they know this can happen to them,” Rodriguez said in a statement.
Rodriguez has since been removed from the case.
The LGBT publication Edge reported on Monday that the FBI announced that the bureau will claim jurisdiction over the case if local investigators conclude that López’s murder is, in fact, a hate motivated crime.
President Barack Obama signed groundbreaking federal hate-crimes legislation just last month. That legislation prohibits hate-motivated violence on the basis of sexual orientation, gender, and gender identity.

GLAAD is traveling to Mexico City today to present iconic actress Lucia Mendez with a GLAAD Media Award for work she did to call attention in Spanish language media to LGBT youth suicide.
This marks the first time GLAAD has traveled outside of the United States to present an award and we’re very excited to be here, recognizing Méndez for her work.
Méndez discussed LGBT youth suicide and the importance of educating the public with tour audiences and on high-rated shows like Ventaneando América, Escandalo TV, El Gordo y la Flaca and Al Rojo Vivo.
“Allies like Lucía help raise the visibility of issues that impact our lives and they help grow support for our community,” said GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios. “As more and more people get to know gay and transgender people, they are coming to understand and respect our community.”

A new Spanish-language public service announcement (PSA) recently premiered on Telemundo, one of the nation’s most important and influential Spanish-language networks.
It is one of two spots that will run on Telemundo. The first features Sofia Vergara (Modern Family) and the second PSA features Vergara along with Zoe Saldana (Star Trek) and Eduardo Xol (Extreme Makeover: Home Edition).
In Spanish, the celebrities remind viewers that their LGBT Latino friends or family members may not always feel included by society and urges viewers to reach out to them. The ads also ask viewers to visit www.glaad.org where the “Hazte Amigo y Aliado” section in Spanish offers a whole host of resources.
“Our straight allies play a crucial role in opening hearts and minds about the lives of LGBT people,” said GLAAD president Jarrett Barrios. “We are so pleased to have Sofia, Zoe and Eduardo lending their voices to this important campaign targeted to Latino audiences- where visibility of LGBT people is often low. By airing these important messages, Telemundo is providing an important platform and resources for LGBT allies.”
GLAAD’s “Be an Ally & a Friend” PSA campaign features 22 public figures from television, film and sports. GLAAD has released a 20- or 30-second version of the PSA through broadcast collaborations with Access Hollywood, national cable networks such as Fox Reality, GSN, IFC, Lifetime, The N, Sci Fi Channel and Sundance Channel; local cable systems and network affiliates; online at LiveVideo, YouTube, LOGO, AOL Video and MySpace.

El programa popular de la cadena Univision, Viva El Sueño, tiene un concursante, Fedro, cuyo estilo de rockero llama la atención igual que algunas críticas sobre su orientación sexual percibida. Hasta hace poco Fedro había mantenido el silencio acerca del asunto.
El 18 de octubre, Fedro hablo de los comentarios que se le dejaron en la cartelera de Univision.com. Un mensaje dijo “eres uno de los mejores en la competencia. No hagas caso a los malos comentarios. Tómalos como apoyo para seguir adelante. ¡Eres el mejor!” y otro dice “Descendiente de Sodoma y Gomorrah, te quiero mandar a la hoguera, vete del concurso.” Fedro no les resto importancia a los comentarios negativos y dijo que “estaba muy contento por todos los comentarios.”
También dijo que le encantaba vivir el sueño y “mostrarme como soy” y que quiere mostrarle a “la gente diferente” que merecen vivir el sueño y ser exitosos en la vida.
Los jueces le dieron mucho apoyo. Enrique Santos le dijo “Mira, esto ha sido un tema muy difícil. Y quizás me busco problema por decirlo, pero lo tengo que decir. Hay muchas personas que no están votando por ti por tu sexualidad. Y eso me molesta.” Santos también le pregunto cual seria su mensaje para estas personas. Sin ni siquiera un parpadeo, Fedro les reto a que se dieran la oportunidad de conocerlo antes de pasarle juicio.

Top-Rated Talent Competition Viva el Sueño Includes Positive Discussion of Perceived Orientation

Univision’s popular show Viva el Sueño, an American Idol-style song contest includes a contestant, Fedro, whose glam-rocker looks have commanded attention as well as some criticism about his perceived sexual orientation. Until recently, he remained silent on the issue.
On the October 18 show, Fedro discussed comments left to or about him on Univision.com message boards. One message said “Don’t let the negative comments get to you, use them to help carry you forward. You’re the best!’ While another viewer said ‘You, descendent of Sodom and Gomorrah… leave the competition.’ Fedro took it all in stride and said he was “touched by all the comments.”
He went on to say that he loves being able to live the dream and ‘show myself the way I am’ and hopes to encourage ‘people who are different’ to go for their dreams, a statement that got much applause from the audience.
The judges were very supportive. Judge Enrique Santos said ‘Look, this has been a difficult topic, I may get in trouble for saying this, but I think that many people may not be voting for you because of your sexuality. And I’m really troubled by that…’ When Santos asked what he would say to these people, without skipping a beat Fedro said he would challenge them to give themselves the opportunity get to know him before judging him.
We say, “Go Fedro and go Viva el Sueño for having such an inclusive attitude!”

Actor Jaime Camil Complains Kisses Censored
People en Español and celebrity shows like Escandalo TV have reported that Mexican actor Jaime Camil is upset that his kissing scenes with a male co-star are getting cut from telecasts of the new novela “Los exitosos Pérez” when it airs in Mexico.
Camil criticized Mexican television, saying it censors or hides gay issues. We so appreciate that an actor as popular as Camil would take such a stand and look forward to seeing the show, kisses and all (hopefully) when it airs in the United States.
Los exitosos Pérez also stars Veronica Castro and Ludwika Paleta.

El actor Mexicano Jaime Camil se quejó porque la televisión mexicana está editando las escenas en las que se besa con otro hombre en la telenovela “Los exitosos Pérez.”
Camil criticó que en México todavía hay una mentalidad de censura donde el tema gay se esconde. Nos alegra que un actor reconocido y popular como Camil exprese este punto de vista y esperamos con anticipación el estreno de la novela en los estados unidos, con todos sus besos.

Telenovelas Come out of the Closet
Imagine this: a handsome young man named Diego, dressed in his red prep school jacket sits outside his home in Colombia one morning, too distraught to join his mother for breakfast. She comes outside and asks what in the world is wrong. The young man tells her that, because he’s gay, he knows he will face ridicule from classmates. His mom not only counsels him that it’s unhealthy to conceal his sexual orientation, but that she will fight for his right to be himself. Within three minutes, openly gay son and openly supportive mom are hugging and walking into the house for breakfast.
That same day at school, Diego’s worst fears come true and he’s taunted by homophobic jeers from his classmates. He defends himself valiantly, which prompts support from some students including Laura, who then declares that she is a lesbian. As the plot develops, Diego even has a relationship with fellow student Santiago, whose father also accepts his son’s sexual orientation.
These storylines, from “Niños Ricos, Pobres Padres” are not the typical coming out stories we’ve seen on Spanish-language television. While the show places its characters in a hyper-titillating and sometimes unrealistic world of gorgeous rich kids, the coming out storylines are far more nuanced than many we’ve seen in the past. In addition to a new way of telling coming out stories, we’re also seeing a lot more of them. Recently, gay or transgender characters have been prominently featured in, among others “Más Sabe el Diablo,” “Victorinos” (both on Telemundo) and “Las Tontas No Van al Cielo” (Univision). The coming out story on “Más Sabe el Diablo also,” refreshingly, features two prominent characters.
The proliferation of stories makes one wonder if growing acceptance of sexual diversity is affecting novela producers and writers or if they’re simply realizing that audiences are ready for shows that reflect the diversity that has always surrounded us. Whatever the reason, we’re happy to see this trend. And while we can applaud these shows with a degree a praise, we would still like to see gay characters portrayed that shake up conventional notions of what it means to be gay and transgender.
Yes, it’s certain we’ll still have to endure tired stereotypes. But in a world that throws plenty of drama at its novela characters, it’s great to see less self loathing and more self acceptance. And sometimes even with the love and support of mamá and papá.
Las Telenovelas Salen del Closet
Imaginate esto: un joven guapo llamado Diego, vestido en su uniforme escolar de chaqueta roja, se sienta afuera de su casa una mañana, sin ganas de desayunar con su mamá. Ella sale y le pregunta que está pasando. Diego le responde que, por ser gay, va a exponerse al ridículo en la escuela. La mamá no solo le dice que es poco sano esconder su orientación pero que ella luchará para que el sea el mismo. En menos de tres minutos, el hijo abiertamente gay y su mamá quien abiertamente lo apoya, regresan a la casa para ese desayuno.
El mismo día, las peores preocupaciones de Diego se hacen realidad y sus compañeros de escuela se burlan de él. El se defiende con valentía, lo cual inspira a que otra alumna, Laura, le confiese a la clase que ella, también, es lesbiana. Al pasar el tiempo, Diego hasta tiene un romance con otro alumno, Santiago, cuyo padre también acepta a su hijo.
Estas historias, de “Niños Ricos, Pobres Padres,” no son las típicas narrativas de salir del armario que hemos visto en los medios en español. Aunque Niños Ricos pone a sus jóvenes en un mundo de mucho dinero y belleza, con historias a veces no tan realísticas, el tema de salir del armario ha sido tratado de una manera más profunda que en el pasado. También vemos más historias con personajes gays. “Más Sabe el Diablo,” “Victorinos” (ambas en Telemundo) y “Las Tontas Van al Cielo” (Univision) todas han incluido personajes importantes y gays o transgéneros. E en algunas, como “Más Sabe el Diablo,” el personaje es central.
La proliferación de historias como estas nos hace preguntar si será que la creciente aceptación de diversidad sexual está afectando a los productores y escritores o si simplemente se han dado cuenta que las audiencias ya están preparadas para ver programas que reflejan la diversidad que siempre nos ha rodeado. Cualquier sea la razón, nos alegra la tendencia. Nos gustaría ver muchos más personajes que cuestionen ideas convencionales de lo que es ser gay o transgénero.
Sí, estamos seguros que desafortunadamente todavía tendremos que ver personajes estereotípicos. Pero en un mundo que le hace vivir tanta drama a sus personajes, es buenísimo ver menos odio y más aceptación propia. Y a veces hasta con el apoyo y amor de mamá y papá.

Uruguay Aprueba Adopción por Padres del Mismo Sexo
Uruguay se convirtió el 9 de septiembre en el primer país de latinoamérica en aprobar matrimonio entre parejas del mismo sexo. En diciembre del 2007, Uruguay aprobó uniones civiles para parejas del mismo sexo, el primer país en latinoamérica de aprobar una ley nacional de este tipo.
“Tienes planes de formar familia, de adoptar. Cuando hay una ley que te proteje, te hace querer tener hijos. Te sientes parte de la sociedad,” le dijo Daniel Alonso residente de Montevideo, la capital del Uruguay, a CNN.
GLAAD le urge a los medios que sigan cubriendo el creciente número de padres gays y lesbianas en Uruguay y reportando sobre como la decisión protegerá a sus familias.

Uruguay Approves Adoption by Same-Sex Couples
On September 9, Uruguay became the first Latin American country to allow same-sex couples to adopt children. In December of 2007, Uruguay’s Congress legalized civil unions for same-sex couples, in the first nationwide law of its kind in Latin America.
“You have plans to form a family, to adopt. When you have a law that protects you, it makes you want to have a child. You feel part of society,” Montevideo resident Daniel Alonso told CNN.

De los Mejores Segmentos en los Medios en Español que Incluyeron Historias LGBT
En nuestro monitoreo diario de los medios, vemos imágenes LGBT. A veces vemos o escuchamos segmentos difamatorios o simplemente problemáticos. Pero, afortunadamente, a veces también vemos, leemos o escuchamos programas o historias que son veraces, influyentes e inclusivas.

Al Rojo Vivo—ARV hizo dos segmentos que aplaudimos. En la primera, nos invitaron a los representantes de GLAAD para que expliquemos porque criticamos comentarios despectivos hechos por Niurka Marcos sobre la supuesta boda de su ex esposo, Yanixán, con una mujer transgénera.
Y en un segundo segmento, ARV hizo una nota interesante sobre un marino abiertamente gay quien fue asesinado en Camp Pendleton Marine Base en San Diego.
Cristina—El show de Cristina del 29 de junio fue dedicado a gays de la tercera edad, y mostro un retrato bien considerado y conmovedor de hombres y mujeres latinos y gays de mayor edad.
Noticiero Telemundo y Noticiero Univision—Ambos programas incluyeron cobertura sobre la extensión de algunos derechos legales a las parejas del mismo sexo de empleados federales.
Noticiero Univision Canal 34—Cecilia Bogran entrevistó a una mujer transgénera quien dice haber sido discriminada en el consulado Mexicano de Los Ángeles.
Noticiero Telemundo—En el noticiero del 23 de julio, en una historia balanceada, Carlos Botifoll reportó sobre el tema de adopción por parejas del mismo sexo.

Some of the Best LGBT Segments on Spanish Language TV
In our daily media monitoring at GLAAD, we look at stories with LGBT content. We often, unfortunately see defamatory or problematic stories. But we also come across stories that are fair, accurate and inclusive.
Listed below are a few of the stories we’ve seen recently that featured LGBT content. Please be sure to let us know if there is something we missed. Al Rojo Vivo-ARV did two segments recently that we applaud. In the first, they invited GLAAD to discuss defamation as it relates to comments made by singer-dancer Niurka Marcos in which she used the wor “f****t” in Spanish and defamed the transgender woman her ex husband had allegedly married. Al Rojo Vivo also did a story on the openly gay Marine killed June 30 at Camp Pendleton Marine Base in San Diego
Cristina—Cristina Saralegui’s June 29 show was entirely dedicated to elderly gays, offering several thoughtful and moving portrayals of elderly Latino gay men and lesbians.
Noticiero Univision Canal 34—Cecilia Bogran interviewed a transgender woman alleging discrimination at the Mexican consulate in Los Angeles.
Noticiero Telemundo and Noticiero Univision—Both national news shows featured strong coverage of President Obama’s decision to grant some limited benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees.
Noticiero Telemundo—The July 23 nightly news featured a balanced story by Carlos Botifoll on adoption by same-sex couples.

GLAAD is following media coverage of two alarming cases. One involves a young Queens, New York woman, Leslie Mora, 27, who was beaten with a belt by two individuals who shouted anti-gay insults, such as ‘f**got.’

The second case involves a bar raid at the Rainbow Lounge in Fort Worth, Texas, where bystanders say police attacked and arrested patrons without provocation. At least one patron was hospitalized and seven others arrested.
Police say they will conduct an investigation. Local residents protested the raid at the county courthouse on Sunday June 28.
This has taken place during the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, which helped launch the LGBT rights movement.
Dos Casos Alarmantes de Violencia, en Nueva York y Texas
En GLAAD estamos siguiendo dos casos alarmantes. El primero es de un ataque violento en Queens, New York, donde una mujer transgénera llamada Leslie Mora, de 27, quien fue atacada con un cinturón por dos personas que gritaban insultos anti-gay en español.
Los que la atacaron a Mora, Trinidad Tapia, 19, y Gilberto Ortiz, 32 fueron arrestados después del ataque. Esto fue obviamenteun crimen de odio y se esta pidiendo que asi se trate bajo la ley, dijo Michael Silverman, el Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund.
El segundo caso occurió en Fort Worth, Texas, donde la comunidad gay y transgénera está sumamente alarmada por lo que dicen haber sido un ataque sin provocación de la policía local en un bar gay llamado el Rainbow Lounge. Por lo menos unos de los clientes tuvo que ser llevado al hospital, y estaba en cuidado intensivo. Otros siete fueron arrestados.
La policía ha dicho que investigará. Miembros de la comunidad protestaron delante de las cortes el domingo, 27 de junio. Este es el aniversario de las ruedas de Stonewall en Nueva York, las cuales ayudaron a lanzar el movimiento de derechos gay y transgénero.

Este 30 de mayo, miles de activistas LGBT y sus amigos y aliados viajaron a Fresno para protestar la decisión de la corte suprema del estado de California, la cual no anuló a la Proposicón 8. La Proposición 8 fue aprobada por aproximadamente 52% de los votantes el 4 de noviembre y eliminó el derecho de matrimonio civíl para parejas del mismo sexo, un derecho que la corte misma otorgó en su fayo de mayo del 2008.
Se veían muchos individuales, parejas y familias Latinas entre los miles protestando en Fresno, incluyendo Christine Chavez, nieta de César Chavez, quien inspiró muchísimo al grupo de manifestantes. Hemos visto tambien mucha cobertura excelente en los medios en español sobre este tema, incluyendo en el programa en Noticiero Telemundo y Despierta America de Univision.
Es alentador ver a tantos Latinos y Latinas contando sus historias en los medios y asi cambiando mentes y corazones. Asi es que llegaremos a contar con millones más de aliados.
On May 30, thousands of LGBT activists and their supporters travelled to Fresno to protest the California Supreme Court decision refusing to overturn Proposition 8. Proposition 8 was approved by approximately 52% of state voters on November 4 and eliminated the right to marriage for gay couples.
Many Latinos were among those gathered in Fresno, including Christine Chavez, the granddaughter of César Chavez who inspired activists with her words. We’ve seen excellent coverage in Spanish-Language media of the marriage decision, including on Noticiero Telemundo and Despierta America on Univision.

It’s great to see so many Latinos telling their stories in the media, helping to change hearts and minds, which is how the LGBT community will soon count millions more allies to our cause.
