ACT NOW: Tweet John Mayer And Ask That He Apologize For Using The F-Word
After excerpts from his interview in Playboy’s March issue spread over the internet yesterday, John Mayer took to his Twitter account to apologize for using the N-word. In the same interview Mayer used the anti-gay F-word when recounting the time he kissed blogger Perez Hilton and has not apologized for using that slur.
In the interview, Mayer is asked if he’s ever kissed a man. He responded:
“The only man I’ve kissed is Perez Hilton. It was New Year’s Eve and I decided to go out and destroy myself. I was dating Jessica [Simpson] at the time, and I remember seeing Perez Hilton flitting about this club and acting as though he had just invented homosexuality. All of a sudden I thought, I can outgay this guy right now. I grabbed him and gave him the dirtiest, tongue-iest kiss I have ever put on anybody—almost as if I hated fags. I don’t think my mouth was even touching when I was tongue kissing him, that’s how disgusting this kiss was. I’m a little ashamed. I think it lasted about half a minute. I really think it went on too long.”
Just as Mayer indicated in his apology, that he meant no offense in his use of the racist slur, we hope the intent behind his use of the F-word was not malicious. As a public figure with millions of fans, Mayer should be more cognizant of the impact his casual use of both slurs can have.
Everyday, countless LGBT people including LGBT people of color, are subjected to harassment, ridicule and even violence because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. More often than not, this verbal abuse includes the use of hurtful anti-gay and racist slurs such as the two that Mayer used. As a talented musician who has made comments supportive of the LGBT community in the past, we expect more from John Mayer and ask that he apologize.

As a gay man, I find John Mayer’s comment a bit off, yeah. However, you all using the term “racist” is going a bit far. We gays are not a “race” of people. We are a community of people, our ethnic background has nothing to do with who we are or why we are homosexual. I abhor the fact that the GLBT community has adopted the term “racist” to describe supposed anti-gay descriptors such as “faggot”.
I also believe that John Mayer wasn’t intending on using the term “fag” in a hateful sense, he was using it to strengthen the description of the story. It’s like when people add curse words into song lyrics. Could they have not included them and got the message across, yes. Would it have been nearly as effective? No.
I think the gay community needs to just take a step back and think before jumping to ridiculous conclusions such as this one.

Racism and Homophobia!? John, do yourself a favor and stop talking out of your ass! You have effectively screwed yourself over, you can stop now.

If I understood it correctly, the racist part was about his having used the N-word, not the F-word. As talented as he is, it looks like John Mayer is an equal opportunity offender. Looks like he should concentrate on singing and playing guitar and give up his ambition to be a comic when he uses both of those very offensive terms in one interview.
No! I can’t stand attempts to silence free speech. John Mayer can say whatever he wants, and we have a right to respond however we want. To try to silence anyone, however, goes too far; it’s wrong.
Robert D, re-read everything. He used the ‘racist’ term, the N-word. He used the ‘anti-gay’ term, the F-word. GLAAD is not calling him out for being a ‘racist’ for using the F-Word. GLAAD demands an apology for his use of the F-word. Mayer only apologized for the racist term.
I posted a request for an apology on his website. Hope it helps get his attention and not anti-gay fans.

I think this is an overreaction, jumping on the reeling media frenzy over a cpl words John used in the attempts at cleverness, which obviously backfired. I completely agree with Roberts comments above. By using the word fag in the telling of his story, he was adding color to it.
There is absolutely no need for an apology here. I think this hypersensitivity actually defuses the power of activism. There is rampant homophobia and racism all around us. Digging into those who just get carried away in their storytelling is completely missing the boat. But hey, if you want to join the pile-on just cause its getting alot of attention, its your choice to do so.
I am a bit disappointed to think that this is news worthy. When there are much greater things that are and have happened that really require us as a GLBT community to ACT NOW, i.e., NH state Rep Nancy Elliott’s disgusting attempt to repeal gay marriage with her comment that “Gay Marriage is like fecal matter”
Or focusing on the Don’t ask Don’t tell repeal. I would really like to see something done about these major issue vs. John Mayor and Perez Hilton.
I’m beginning to question why I joined GLAAD
Dear John,
You can sing – you are good-looking – you have a “napalm” lover – you have money – you have fame – you have a promising career.
I’m sure there are many humans out there, that take pause to wonder why someone (and not only you) find it so compelling to “Holly-weird it up” – instead of recognizing what a fortunate man you are. Instead, like many others, you “F” word it up, and end up with the “S” word all over your shoes.
- One of your “F” word fans.
Yea, we’re all victims of those mean old words. We need to move beyond this whining & carping, always demanding apologies from celebrities for a verbal slight.
I’m so happy GLAAD is there, fighting the fight for us. I mean, of course John Mayer needs to apologize…what a jerk! I hate these rock stars and their idiot jokes. I just thank my lucky stars that GLAAD is making sure he is brought to task…such an important use of resources and undoubtedly a PR master stroke.
I don’t know who is a bigger waste of time…John Mayer and his mouth or GLAAD for actually thinking this was important.
