GLAAD Responds to Bilerico and The Cleveland Show
November 30, 2009 by Taj Paxton, GLAAD's Director of Entertainment Media
This morning, Bilerico blogged about the November 22 episode of The Cleveland Show, “A Brown Thanksgiving,” and GLAAD’s perceived lack of a response to the episode. We had reached out to Fox and the show’s producers, prior to Bilerico’s blog, to schedule a meeting. This is part of an ongoing discussion that GLAAD is having with Fox regarding consistent homophobic and transphobic jokes in some of its animated programming. The problematic transgender episode Bilerico points to is one of several instances that the Entertainment Team will be discussing with them, as well as advocating for more fair LGBT inclusion.
You can view the episode here:
GLAAD posts snapshots on a weekly basis on the home page, where you can read about our transgender advocacy. Reporters, producers, and editors consistently get terminology wrong and our Programs team is working to educate and correct stories that run as well as proactively tell stories of the transgender community. Just last week GLAAD worked with a San Diego news station after a sensational transgender story. Some other recent examples:
Two weeks ago we advocated the Honolulu Star Bulletin correct a story about the transgender victim of a hate crime where they used problematic terminology. The same week we also posted several blog posts at glaadBLOG.org with leading trans advocates for Transgender Day of Remembrance and a video with Candis Cayne discussing the power in our visibility.
Earlier this month Seventeen magazine released a letter to readers after our Director of National News sat down with editors about their article “My BOYFRIEND turned out to be a girl.”
In just the last eight weeks, our Media Programs team have pitched a story on a transgender pianist to the New York Times which ran in their Sunday edition, helped draft and secure a mother’s story about her transgender daughter on The Grio (MSNBC’s African American site) and media trained Reverend David Weekly before an appearance on The Early Show.
In September the Entertainment team received an apology from Lil Mama, a judge on MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew, after we received several incident reports about an anti-transgender critique.
GLAAD’s statements on MTV/Lil Mama’s remarks received widespread media coverage and the America’s Best Dance Crew statements called attention to transgender issues in mainstream press. We hope those interested in learning more will continue to check glaad.org and glaadBLOG for updates.

GLAAD Reacts to Early Show’s Decision to Blur Adam Lambert Kiss
November 25, 2009 by Jonathan Rosales, GLAAD's Entertainment Media Manager
Yesterday, GLAAD issued a statement applauding CBS for its decision to feature Adam Lambert on The Early Show after Good Morning America cancelled his planned appearance. However, during the broadcast this morning, The Early Show made the decision to blur the image of Adam kissing his keyboardist. In response, GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios has issued the following statement:
“The Early Show’s decision this morning to blur Adam Lambert’s kiss from the American Music Awards reinforces an unfortunate double standard that is applied to openly gay performers,” said Jarrett Barrios, President of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). “I would have hoped CBS would provide the same treatment for images of gay and lesbian people and not create an unfair double standard that treats our community differently. CBS regularly shows kisses throughout every daypart. The kiss was not blurred on ABC nor in news coverage on other networks. While we continue to applaud The Early Show for featuring Adam Lambert today, we have reached out to the show’s producers to express our concerns about their decision and offer ways they can make their coverage of gay and transgender people more fair.”

November 25, 2009 by Daryl Hannah, GLAAD's Media Field Strategist
Hundreds of people gathered in New York City’s historic Greenwich Village Sunday, Nov. 22 to take a stand against anti-LGBT violence. The vigil was held in honor of Jorge Steven Lopez Mercado, the 19-year-old openly gay man who was brutally murdered more than a week ago in Puerto Rico.
The vigil, run concurrently with vigils in 15 other cities, was organized in conjunction with GLAAD and featured several prominent elected officials. GLAAD’s President Jarrett Barrios was a featured speaker.
“A lot of us who grew up Latino, grew up with this machismo ingrained in us, we need to examine what’s underneath,” said Barrios, a sentiment that echoed throughout the mostly Latino crowd.
The vigil was the latest public outcry after Juan Martinez Matos, 26, pled guilty to murdering Mercado. Matos, was also charged with three weapons and one count of hiding evidence.
Despite the evidence against Matos, the Puerto Rican government says it’s still “unclear” how it will prosecute him. Law officials speculate the government may try the case as a simple murder case (without it being designated as a hate crime) because Matos claims he “didn’t know the gender of Mercado.” But for many vigil attendees and elected officials across the country—that is unacceptable.
“This is a hate crime!” City Councilwoman Christine Quinn, the first openly lesbian Speaker of the City Council, told reporters. “The attack against any American because of their sexual orientation or gender identity is unacceptable, and will be prosecuted to the highest and fullest extent of the law,” she said.
There is mounting pressure on Attorney General Eric Holder to pressure the Puerto Rican government to try the case as a hate crime. If Puerto Rico agrees, this could be the first case tried under the new Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act.

Good Morning America Cancels Adam Lambert Appearance After Racy AMA Performance
November 24, 2009 by Jonathan Rosales, GLAAD's Entertainment Media Manager
On ABC’s Sunday night broadcast of the 2009 American Music Awards, American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert gave a show-stopping performance of his lead single “For Your Entertainment,” that ultimately proved to be quite controversial.
Since coming out on the cover of Rolling Stone in June, there’s no denying that Lambert has become the most prominent openly gay music performer of the year. In a show packed with A-List talent such as Whitney Houston, Jay-Z, Kelly Clarkson, and the openly bisexual Lady Gaga, Lambert was chosen for the plum show-closing performance at the AMA’s, a strong testament to America’s anticipation for his debut album, For Your Entertainment, which was released yesterday.
Prior to the show, Lambert promised MTV that his AMA performance would be “sexy” and he certainly delivered. Strutting amongst leather-clad musicians and dancers, Lambert made out with a male keyboardist, danced suggestively with numerous dancers of both genders and simulated oral sex with a male dancer on a leash. The simulated oral sex was censored for the West Coast broadcast, though the rest of the performance was shown in full.
Not surprisingly, the performance sparked the ire of the anti-gay Parent’s Television Council which called on its members to contact ABC and Dick Clark Productions. ABC says they has received 1,500 complaints, though they also say this is only a “moderate” number. It’s unlikely ABC will face any fines from the FCC, which does now allow “indecent material” between the hours of 6-10 PM. Lambert took the stage well after 10 PM.
The fall out continued this morning as ABC’s Good Morning America announced that they had canceled tomorrow’s planned performance by Adam Lambert. In a statement to Entertainment Weekly, they said:
“Given his controversial American Music Awards performance, we were concerned about airing a similar concert so early in the morning.”
GLAAD has reached out to ABC to voice our concerns. In positive news however, the above Entertainment Weekly article also reports that CBS‘ The Early Show has booked Lambert to appear, as has David Letterman, so be sure to tune in to CBS tomorrow for your Adam Lambert fix!

Jason Mattison, African American Gay Teen Murdered
November 24, 2009 by Kellee Terrell, COAD Media Strategist @ GLAAD
The murder of openly gay teen Jason Mattison Jr., 15, has shaken the city of Baltimore.
On Nov. 10, police found Mattison raped, gagged and stabbed to death in a closet at his aunt’s house. The main suspect is Dante Parish, 35, a family friend and convicted felon who served only 10 years of an original 30-year sentence for an earlier crime.
The Nov. 18 edition of The Baltimore Sun published the article, “Many unanswered questions in killing of youth.” It provided the details about this horrid crime:
The day Jason’s body was found, it was Couplin who called police, at 3 a.m. Nov. 10. She reported that someone had broken into the house and stolen a television from the living room. A police officer came and wrote a larceny report.
Couplin called police again at 5:09 a.m., saying that she saw blood on a banister leading to the second floor. She also reported Jason missing.
Police found his body in the back of a second-floor closet. Charging documents say that “several witnesses were identified and positively identified defendant Dante Parrish as the person responsible for this act.” Couplin said she now believes the missing television was a diversion to make it look like a break-in.
Police arrested Parrish two days later at a convenience store on Moravia Road. A department spokesman said Parrish confessed to the killing the next day and is being held without bail.
The article added there were still many unanswered questions regarding this case:
Did Jason leave his mother’s house and move in with his aunt, as his grandmother suggested? Or was he just visiting on that fateful day, as a cousin said? And why did people in his aunt’s house open their door to the suspect, a convicted killer released early from prison because of flaws in his case?
“From now on, we do have to take more care in who we let in and who we trust,” said Jason’s cousin, Laquanna Couplin, who lives in the house on Llewellyn Avenue where Jason was killed.
She described Dante Parrish, 35, who is charged with first-degree murder in the case, as a longtime family friend, but she would not say whether he lived there or visited.
Mattison was described as a popular and vivacious student who was loved by his classmates:
Jason loved texting and talking, and he spent his evenings chatting with friends on MySpace.
Jason was one of the most popular kids at school, his English teacher said, always first to class, always first to the cafeteria, where students fought to sit at his table, always first to turn in his homework and always getting near-perfect grades.
“He was outspoken and excited about everything he talked about,” Jones said. “Walking into school, he was the first one to share what he did over the weekend. He was very, very popular, and he was everyone’s best friend.”
Jason wanted to be a pediatrician, Jones said, and the only thing the two debated was Jason’s constant chatter.
According to another Baltimore Sun story published on Nov. 19, Mattison’s funeral took place on Wednesday, Nov. 18.
An overflow crowd spilled out of the sanctuary and into the vestibule of a West Baltimore church Wednesday morning for the funeral of Jason Mattison Jr.
The principal at Jason’s school announced a scholarship fund set up in his name. Friends and family recalled stories involving the rambunctious teenager, who had dreams of becoming a pediatrician. And the reverend of the church told hundreds of mourners that the boy’s death should serve as a warning to the downtrodden neighborhood where it happened to closely watch all kids.
GLAAD will continue to watch to follow this story and provide updates.

Educating ESPN.com Readers on the Dangers of Homophobia in Sports
November 23, 2009 by Emily Witko, Sports Media Intern @ GLAAD
Recently, our president, Jarrett Barrios, wrote an article for ESPN.com outlining the dangers of homophobia in sports. The piece began with a condensed version of the Larry Johnson saga, and then shifted into a detailed description of GLAAD’s Sports Media Program.
Barrios explains GLAAD’s zero-tolerance approach to Larry Johnson’s use of anti-gay slurs and his subsequent suspension from the Chiefs. Despite his personal punishment, we are disappointed that the NFL is not using this as an important educational tool on the dangers of anti-gay attitudes and words. The sports world remains a very hostile environment for LGBT players, coaches, fans and allies “because when anti-gay epithets go uncorrected, it sends a message that it’s OK to denigrate gay people and their families.”
GLAAD’s Sports Media Program will continue to address the needs of amateur and professional athletes, until “openly gay athletes will be cheered, booed and treated just the same as their teammates.”
The accessible and prominent article will reach a wide audience of readers and offers and hopefully spark conversations. The article demonstrates to LGBT readers that they have a voice within sports culture, but it also serves to change the hearts and minds of many avid fans.

Media Focuses on Missing African-American Lesbian, Mitrice Richardson
November 20, 2009 by Kellee Terrell, COAD Media Strategist @ GLAAD
It’s been almost two and a half months since Mitrice Richardson, 24, went missing after being released from a Malibu/Lost Hills police station in mid September. The Los Angeles Times reports that her father is extremely frustrated with the circumstances behind how his daughter was released from police custody and the lack of clues as to her whereabouts.
[The] missing woman’s father, Michael Richardson, 42, is now pressing authorities to release security footage from the night Richardson was taken into custody, believing it will prove that she was in no state to be discharged.
“I’m at a breaking point,” he said.
Mitrice Richardson vanished after leaving the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Malibu/Lost Hills station Sept. 17 on foot with no purse or cellphone. She had been released shortly after midnight after being arrested on suspicion of failing to pay for her meal at Geoffrey’s Malibu and possession of less than an ounce of marijuana. Witnesses said Richardson behaved strangely that night, telling people she was from Mars.
Since then, several sightings have been reported, but none has panned out, LAPD Det. Steven Eguchi said last week, adding that no evidence of foul play had been found.
In spite of the details about her arrest, Blogger Jasmyne Cannick reports that Richardson was a woman who was on the right track.
By all accounts, Mitrice Richardson was doing the right thing. A Cal State Fullerton graduate who studied psychiatry, Mitrice had planned on taking her education to the lesbian and gay community because she felt that there weren’t enough qualified and sensitive psychiatrists that catered to people who were gay. She lived with her great-grandmother on East 118th Street in Watts and was getting ready to start work as a teacher.
Shewired.com also reported that Richardson odd behavior that night was out of character:
This was not typical behavior for the former beauty pageant contestant, who graduated from Cal State Fullerton with a 4.0 grade point average, held down two jobs, volunteered for charity, and was in a committed relationship with another dynamic young woman.
Her parents admitted that Richardson suffers from mental disease and that may have played a factor in her demeanor that evening.
Tessa Moon, Richards’ girlfriend of two years reached out to the LGBT community
to ask for help. The Advocate wrote:
Tessa Moon [made] an appeal on [November 2nd] at the Jewel’s Catch One community room in Los Angeles. Moon and Richardson have been in a relationship for two years.
“If I could tell her anything right now, it would be ‘Don’t be afraid. We’re coming.”
Her family has created a blog, Bring Mitrise Richardson Home, which provides up-to-date news, links to other media covering her disapearance and YouTube videos of vigils and searches that
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to Richardson’s whereabouts. Anyone with information is asked to call (213) 485-2531.
