Just in 2008, in addition to appearing as openly gay detective Donald Strachey in here! Actress Kelly McGillis Comes Out
April 30, 2009 by Sarah
Kelly McGillis, star of Top Gun and The Accused, came out as lesbian in an April 30 interview with SheWired.com. She told vlogger Jennifer Corday that her “life in a whole different phase” and that she is “done with the man thing.”
The actress said that realizing her sexuality has been an ongoing process for her since she was 12 years old, but through her life faced getting over being convinced that God was punishing her for being gay.
Corday told McGillis that it’s much easier to become spiritual now and people realize that “God is okay with you being gay.”
McGillis added that “life is a freaking journey, and it’s about growing and changing, and coming to terms with who and what you are, and loving who and what you are.”
Remember when McGillis guest starred on The L Word as a closeted Army Colonel trying a Don’t Ask Don’t Tell case? Brilliant!
CarMax Agrees to Pull Problematic Advertisement Following GLAAD Outreach
April 30, 2009 by Cindi Creager, GLAAD's Director of National News
GLAAD constituents alerted us this week to a problematic advertisement by CarMax, a Richmond, Virginia based used car company with 100 stores across the country. After reviewing the ad we immediately reached out to the company.
The ad, titled, “Smart: Pick-up Artist” depicts a man in a coffee shop trying to get the attention of a person he believes to be a female customer with long hair. He stands behind the person and says:
“Do you believe in love at first sight or should I walk by again?”
But when the person with long hair turns around and appears to be male, the man making the advance reacts with shock. The picture freezes on the both men’s reaction and the words “not smart,” appear on the screen. The announcer says:
That is not smart. What is smart is shopping at CarMax. With thousands of cars priced at 12-thousand or less the right one for you is ready today.
Then a CarMax employee says to the customer who had made the earlier advance and is now looking at a car on a lot full of cars:
“So is she the one?”
He responds:
“I love her.”
Announcer then concludes with:
“Now more than ever the smart choice is CarMax, the way car buying should be.”
GLAAD called public relations representatives at CarMax and asked that the ad be removed from their website and pulled from the local markets where it is airing. We explained that it gave the impression that a man hitting on a man or being gay is not ok or “not smart,” as the ad said. It also played on troubling gender stereotypes about being “fooled” and then “shocked” after realizing someone is not the “right” sex.
CarMax representatives listened to our concerns and agreed to pull the ad from the website and remove it from further airings in local markets. They also discussed potentially collaborating with GLAAD on future ad campaigns to ensure they are in line with fair, accurate and inclusive standards.
This is the link to the removed ad but you can view other ads that were part of the same campaign.
You can view the CarMax diversity policy here.
It states:
Our commitment to diversity
We are committed to welcoming, respecting, and celebrating the unique attributes of our Associates, customers, and communities.
We recognize the value that diversity contributes to our organization and the competitive advantage we can maintain by having a broad range of talents, perspectives, and ideas with a commitment to continuously improving our business.
GLAAD appreciates that CarMax listened to our concerns and realized that the “pick-up artist” ad was not in line with its own diversity policy. We applaud the company for pulling the offensive content and look forward to keeping an an open dialogue.
CarMax sent us a note this morning confirming the ad would be pulled and indicating their willingness to communicate with us in the future:
CarMax appreciates the open dialogue with GLAAD.
We want to continue this dialogue and build upon that relationship.
Texas NBC Affiliate Misses the Mark on Coverage of Matthew Shepard Act
April 30, 2009 by Chuy Sanchez, Senior Media Strategist @ GLAAD
This week, as the House passes the Matthew Shepard Act and the Senate reintroduces its own version of the legislation, local media outlets are talking about this issue and how it affects local communities.
Last week, on April 23, an NBC affiliate station (KETK) in Tyler, Texas aired a segment titled “Gays could soon be protected under law”.
Reporter Lindsay Landry speaks about the inclusion of the LGBT community under the federal hate crimes bill in religious terms, “Most know that any time religion and sexual orientation makes it into the news, it’s bound to cause some controversy and this new bill proposal is no different.”
At first, the segment seems to play into the misleading claims of anti-gay activists that the inclusive hate crimes laws would affect the freedom of religious expression.
Fortunately, the segment later manages to distinguish between a direct call for violent action and religious preaching – preaching that would not be affected in any way if the inclusive federal hate crimes bill passes.
While the original segment had problematic elements, a follow-up segment from Monday, April 27 titled “KTBB’s Question of the Day for Monday: KETK Viewers respond to Debate on Hate Crimes” reinforced those very misconceptions about the bill.
In that segment, the anchors — Bob Brackeen and Charlotte Huffman — and radio host Garth Maier debate people’s responses to the proposed bill.
A number of callers’ personal opinions are included, and most of them reinforce inaccuracies and misinformation, which the journalists fail to address or correct, such as:
GARTH MAIER: Do you think that religious preachers should be exempt or protected from prosecution under any hate crimes bill?
CALLER: …I think whoever proposed this legislation was probably or is probably a homosexual, and if this passes, this is going to start a domino effect that we’re going to see for years. It’s going to greatly influence our personal freedoms.
Take a look:
Please share your thoughts about the two reports with KETK so that we can ensure that the reporting on this legislation is fair, accurate and inclusive.

Carrie Prejean: Beauty or Bryant?
April 29, 2009 by Andy Marra, Senior Media Strategist @ GLAAD
Miss California, otherwise known as Carrie Prejean, is back in the spotlight.
Earlier the Miss USA contestant came under fire because of her on-stage response to a question about the right for same-sex couples to marry. This time around she’s taking the personal and making it political.
Politico reported today the beauty queen is teaming up with the National Organization of Marriage to produce a second ad attacking marriage equality. The official announcement will be made tomorrow at a press conference being held at the National Press Club. The anti-gay group is reportedly doling out $1.5 million dollars for their television ads.
But that’s not all. Before tomorrow’s DC press conference, the losing Miss USA contestant made a pit stop in Lynchburg, Virgina to speak at Liberty University, an anti-gay college founded by the now deceased Rev. Jerry Falwell.
It sounds like Prejean may be trying to channel a little bit of Anita Bryant. The retired beauty queen won Miss Oklahoma in 1958 and was a second runner-up for Miss America in 1959. Bryant became notoriously known for her anti-gay organizing efforts across the country.
Bryant went on to become the Flordia Citrus Commission spokeswoman but later lost the gig due to a nationwide boycott of orange juice by the LGBT community and bad publicity for her anti-gay efforts.
Just like orange juice toting Bryant, Ms. Prejean is in the minority among her peers. It was just reported that former Miss California and former Miss USA winner Shanna Moakler will be appearing in an ad campaign protesting California’s Proposition 8, the statewide initiative that overturned marriage for gay and lesbian couples in November 2008.
Former Miss California contestants Raquel Beezley and Tamiko Nash donned tiaras and appeared in the ads produced by NO H8. Brook Lee also shot for the ad campaign. Lee started her beauty queen career in 1997 as Miss. Hawaii and later went on to become Miss USA and Miss Universe.
Below you can see some historic media coverage of Anita Bryant and her anti-gay tirades:
Congresswoman Foxx Claims Matthew Shepard Hate Crime Murder Was “A Hoax”
April 29, 2009 by Justin Cole, GLAAD's Director of Digital Media
Here’s what Congresswoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) had to say on the floor of the House of Representatives today:
“The hate crimes bill that’s called the Matthew Shepard Bill [sic] is named after a very unfortunate incident that happened where a young man was killed. But we know that that young man was killed in the commitment of a robbery. It wasn’t because he was gay. The bill was named for him, the hate crimes bill was named for him, but it’s, it’s really a hoax, that that continues to be used as an excuse for passing these bills.”
GLAAD President Neil G. Giuliano responded in a statement released today:
Congresswoman Foxx’s comments are repugnant and should be condemned by all fair-minded people in the strongest possible terms. We urge media to expose Foxx’s falsehood and her malicious disregard for the basic facts of this case.
Just the other day we saw Glenn Beck, the host of Fox News’ Glenn Beck Program, allow Sandy Rios, president of the anti-gay Culture Campaign, to perpetuate the same false and hurtful claim.
However, as you can see here and here, GLAAD debunked the ABC News reporting YEARS ago. Here is a quote from former GLAAD Executive Director, Joan M. Garry, in a November 2004 press release:
This piece says much, much more about 20/20 than it does about the murder of Matthew Shepard. 20/20’s misleading oversimplifications and distortions do a tremendous disservice to a complicated case. This simply is not a credible piece of journalism.
Take a moment and read through GLAAD’s “10 QUESTIONS ABOUT ABC’S 20/20 SHOW ON MATTHEW SHEPARD” for more information.
It’s unfortunate that many conservatives and conservative media outlets are twisting the facts are mis-reporting both the story of Matthew Shepard and the impact of the pending hate crime legislation.
For instance, here is Molly Henneberg who, “uncritically reported the false claim made by religious groups that the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act would allow individuals or groups to “be prosecuted for their religious beliefs.”
Even on the local level, you can find reports like the below from Texas, where KTBB AM 600’s Garth Maier takes listeners’ calls and falsely claims the legislation could “potentially criminalize preaching against homosexuality,” and that its “opening up a can of worms.”
GLAAD is continuing to monitor the media for mis-reporting like you see above. We’re reaching out, asking for corrections and clarification, urging members and supporters to take action where necessary, and working to ensure fair, accurate and inclusive coverage of this and other issues important to the LGBT community.
Federal Hate Crimes Bill Passes the House
April 29, 2009 by Amanda Morgan, GLAAD's Digital Initiatives Fellow
As reported by the Associated Press and the Boston Globe, the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act (H.R. 1913) passed the House of Representatives Wednesday, 249 – 175.
The bill includes bias motivated crimes committed based on the race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability of the victim.
According to the Boston Globe, Senator Edward M. Kennedy of Masachussetts, who is the Senate’s chief sponsor of the bill, issued this statement this afternoon:
“I commend the House for its action to strengthen the inadequate existing federal law on hate crimes. No members of society, none, deserve to be victims of a violent crime because of their race, their religion, their ethnic background, their disability, their gender, their gender identity, or their sexual orientation. It’s long past time for Congress to do more to prevent hate crimes and insist that they be fully investigated and prosecuted when they occur. This important legislation is supported by a broad coalition of over 300 law enforcement, civic, religious and civil rights organizations and I look forward to prompt action by the Senate”
The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Action Fund and the Anti-Defamation Legaue have both issued statements hailing the House’s decision.
More information will be posted as it is made available.
Massachusetts Clergy Debunk Myths
April 29, 2009 by Tania Torres, GLAAD's Religion, Faith & Values
The Empire State Pride Agenda (ESPA), New York’s statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights advocacy organization, recently released the web video “Marriage Equality and Religion: The Massachusetts Experience.”
ESPA’s “Pride in the Pulpit” staff invited Massachusetts clergy – the Reverend Nancy Taylor of Old South Church; the Reverend Thomas Shaw, Episcopal bishop of the Diocese of Massachusetts; and the Reverend Michael Wayne Walker of Messiah Baptist Church in Brockton – to discuss how laws that require civil marriage equality do not impact each faith tradition’s ability to decide who they will or will not marry.
In a press release, Executive Director Alan Van Capelle stated: “The Empire State Pride Agenda is committed to refuting myths that have been articulated across the country about the consequences of marriage for same-sex couples. This issue is too important for our families and us to let them go unanswered in New York.”
Sundays of Solidarity
April 29, 2009 by Tania Torres, GLAAD's Religion, Faith & Values
Atticus Circle and Soulforce are teaming up for a nationwide action involving LGBT equality advocates visiting faith communities across the United States called Sundays of Solidarity (SOS).
The SOS campaign will start May 17, the International Day Against Homophobia, and will end on June 28 – the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion in New York City. Advocates for LGBT equality will visit churches, synagogues and other faith communities across the nation for seven straight Sundays in order to start dialogue about LGBT people and issues with members of faith communities across the nation.
SOS participants will be given training and will attend worship services and other faith community meetings wearing T-shirts and buttons proclaiming “Gay? Fine by Me.”
GLAAD will be assisting both organizations with raising awareness of SOS and amplifying the media coverage of their excellent work. GLAAD previously collaborated with Soul Force and Atticus Circle in 2007 and 2008 in media strategy planning for Seven Straight Nights, a series of vigils and awareness-raising events held across the nation to bring LGBT equality supporters together in demonstrations of public support.
Atticus Circle is an Austin-based organization that educates and mobilizes fair-minded straight people to advance equal rights for LGBT people. Soulforce is known for its Equality Ride, during which they travel around the country to challenge anti-gay policies at Christian colleges or visit American Family Outings at mega-churches to share stories about LGBT families.
In order to promote the Sundays of Solidarity event, Jeff Lutes, Executive Director of Soulforce and Rev. Paul Dodd released the following video where they talk about the inspiration behind the campaign.
Angie Zapata’s Story Honored by Family and GLAAD
April 29, 2009 by Adam @ GLAAD
In the midst of the Angie Zapata murder trial in Greeley, Colo., which came to a conclusion last week with the sentencing of Allen Andrade, I was able to travel with Angie’s sisters Monica and Stephanie – along with their close family friend Tina Blea – from Colorado to Los Angeles for the GLAAD Media Awards.
Univision’s Aqui y Ahora had been nominated for two segments on Angie’s story in the Spanish Language Newsmagazine Category. As Monica Trasandes, GLAAD’s Director of Spanish Language Media, wrote last week, when the winner was announced, Monica Zapata joined Aqui y Ahora producer Belisa Morillo onstage to accept the award.
While we were held over, I had the opportunity, for the first time, to have a very casual conversation with Monica, Stephanie and Tina. Previously we had talked many times, but they were almost always focused conversations about our work with the media around Angie’s life and death.
What has become abundantly clear to me with every conversation I have with this remarkable family is how much they love Angie – and how much they stick together.
Over dinner they remarked that their trip to Los Angeles for the GLAAD Media Awards was particularly significant to them because of Angie. “You know, this was Angie’s dream. She dreamed of going away, being famous, and having her picture everywhere. She would have loved to take this trip,” they told me. They said that Angie dreamed big, and they feel that their first trip to LA was an opportunity to honor her dreams.
They also told me that Angie’s favorite movie was A Girl Like Me: The Gwen Araujo Story, which won a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Television Movie in 2007. In life, Angie saw a lot of similarities between herself and Gwen. She used to make her family watch the movie over and over with her.
It is devastating that now Gwen and Angie share more than the same life story – but that they were both victims of anti-transgender violence.
In court on the day before she arrived in L.A., Monica recounted that she used to tell Angie to be safe “every day.” She worried about the cruelty that exists in the world against transgender people.
At the event, she stood up while accepting the award and said these words to the audience:
“My family, some who are with me here tonight, always loved and supported Angie. We understood that she was born in a boy’s body but she was a woman. So many transgender people do not receive that love, acceptance and support.
I would like to thank the reporter and producers of the Aqui y Ahora segment for treating Angie and her story with so much respect. And for telling her story to Latino audiences.
Thank you to GLAAD for bringing us here, for recognizing Angie’s story and for helping us with the trial, and more. To all of you here tonight, I would like to say exactly what I would tell Angie if she was here. Be yourself and be proud of who you are. No tengas verguenza. Eres una buena persona (Don’t be ashamed, you are a good person.)”
You can also watch a video of producer Belissa Morillo accepting the award for the Aqui y Ahora segments as well as Monica’s speech below:
The resolve of seeing this wonderful family stand up and demand dignity is inspiring. It is my hope, that as this family continues to speak up they can, as Monica implores people, “change the world for Angie.”
